5-0 out of 5 stars A winning cell phone for Sprint PCS
The last PCS cell phone I owned was the venerable SCP-8100 from Sanyo. It was a cute little phone that was the second cell phone from any U.S. carrier that could take pictures. (The first-ever model was the SCP-5300 also from Sanyo, released in July 2002.) The PM-8200 addressed two shortcoming of the 8100: 1) camera quality, and 2) speakerphone.

The 8200 sports a higher-resolution built-in camera. Picture quality is also improved. The old 8100's pictures often had streaks and distorted colors. The 8200's pictures look much better. The speakerphone is definitely a great addition for those of us who like to multi-task yet dislike headsets. The volume and clarity could be a little better, but given the compact size of this phone, it's not bad.

Reception on the 8200 is great, thanks to its external antenna. Battery life is good, unless you save a lot of things in memory, which depletes battery faster the more stuff it holds. The phone is attractive and can be customized in many ways, not to mention it comes in three colors. To Sanyo, I suggest you use the iPod Mini color scheme, because not many people like big red!

In summary, the 8200 delivers lots of improvements over the already-excellent 8100. If you have Sprint or plan to get Sprint, this is the phone. If you want video recording, check out the Toshiba phone for Sprint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Problem with the network and not the phone...
I got a hold of this phone about a month ago and have to say that I am pleased overall. It is my 4th Sprint phone, and is my second favorite- a big boost over the old Sanyo 4500, but not quite the great reception of the Samsung 8500 (1st generaion Sprint phone). I have found that the reception is the problem of Sprint's network, and not the phone itself, so I cannot throw any fault at Sanyo.

Beyond the reception, the phone is stacked with features. The camera is a nice one, and I like to take pictures of places I am at and share them with people not with me before I erase them. The quality is not of a digital camera, but for someone just using them for kicks like I do, its alright. The zoom on the camera is a little tricky, but another nice touch, as is the flash and the frames you can put around the pics.

Another great feature is the speaker phone- it is way clearer than landline speakerphones that I have used, and is a great alternative to a clumsy headset.

Also, the screens are tight, with brilliant color and clear resolution. Still, what happened to some free screen savers and games. Even the games on here are trials - you get interrupted in the middle with a clever reminder that the game must be purchased using Sprint online. I am surprised sometimes that you dont have to pay a fee to just open the phone sometimes.

Another problem with the phone is the lack of accessories, partly due to its newness- I blew 30 beans on a Sprint leather case, but it can't hold a torch to the Bodyglove Ion or Cellsuit cases. Still with time this I am sure will be fixed.

I got the phone with a lot of rebates and think the cost/benefit is phenomenal. Still, I dont know about the 280 price tag. Overall, though, this is a great phone, as far as Sprint phones go, that is.

5-0 out of 5 stars i love this phone
this phone comes in handy all the time the menus are user friendly it looks nice and it holds 100 pictures the ting i use most often me being a outdoor person is the flash light its not really bright but you can see in the dark with it

5-0 out of 5 stars take it from a verizon wireless employee..get this phone!
Let's just say that after working at Verizon for a while, that I have come to realize that their phones are pretty shoddy compared to Sprint's.

While Sprint's total coverage area of america isn't as good as Verizon's, we're here to talk about phones rather than service (although i could argue for Sprint's superiority)...

So after going Sprint, I saw this phone and saw the price. At first I thought I was seeing things, because a feature-equivalent Verizon Wireless phone would sell for easily one hundred more dollars. Well, after the initial shock, I did some research on this little phone, and after purchasing it, verified some things...

Incredible battery life (advertised as 3.5 hours talk time, 12 DAYS standby); although I haven't tested these numbers, I've had this puppy on for a long time and have yet to go under two out of three bars of battery life!

Compact and lightweight...It's a LITTLE smaller than most phones I've encountered, yet the buttons are not too close together at all for someone with big fingers, nor is the screen too small for people who cannot see well.

Nice looking to boot! Definitely the nicest looking phone I've seen in a while (only one that maybe compares is the LG VX6000). It's sleek, and the blue looks really sharp both up close and far away.

Now onto the best parts...The features!

Ready link...Not that I use it, but it's great to have such a thing included if I ever decide to go ready link.

Speakerphone! One of the nicest features about the phone, the speakerphone is VERY loud compared to other phones I have used, and as far as I've been told, I sound pretty decent from my end.

Camera...Has a flash, zoom capabilities, the ability to send picture mail, link a photo to a caller ID (so you see the photo when a particular person calls), etc etc. It's got all the camera features you'll ever need!

Quality of sound...I don't know what other reviewers are talking about, because whether I'm using my plantronics headset, using the speakerphone, or just talking normally, everyone sounds crystal clear! Very rarely will you get some distortion in the way the person sounds, but that may just be a result of the service and not the phone itself. In fact, I would say that is likely.

Key layout...I couldn't rate this high enough! The speakerphone has a dedicated key, as does the camera. The buttons are all spaced out nicely and are big enough for those with big fingers. In terms of layout, this baby trumps all of the verizon phones I've ever used.

Menu layout...Superb! Everything is easy to get to, and the most commonly used menu items (settings, downloads, messaging, and contacts) have one button shortcuts built into the phone! The menu itself is really nicely put together, with every setting put in the logical place (unlike many phones i've used, unfortunately).

What complaints do I have about the phone?

Sometimes the button on the side that's used to answer the phone is a little annoying. Why? Because if you just press it quickly, it'll mute the ring (which is a nice feature). But if you press it quickly, because you're not used to it yet, you'll be sitting there struggling to answer the phone. It's just something that needs some getting used to.

I guess the only other thing I could possibly be disappointed about is that you can't have the date and your personalized 10ish-character greeting display on top of your custom background. You'll still see the time, battery life, service, etc, but not those two things. Why????? It should at least be an option to turn on/off.

So..to summarize...It's the nicest/most reliable/most fun phone i've owned, scoring high in every category. Battery life A+, features A+, layout A+, aesthetics A+, sound quality A (would be a + if I could verify the distortion I SOMETIMES experience is a result of sprint, not the phone).

Oh and one last thing: Unlike most phones you'll buy today, this one doesn't actually seem fragile; it has a very durable feel to it.

To be cliched, go get this phone now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone!
I was looking for phone w/ good functionality. I could careless about the bells and whistles. Custom ringtones, screensavers, games? Who cares! I remember when phones were just phones. But I must confess this time around I wanted a camera in my phone. I'm always using my digital camera but because it's so big and bulky (plus who wants to drag around a digicam when you're in a poolhall or bar?) I rarely have it with me. After doing my homework I settled on the 8200 and wow was I ever impressed! The camera works great but obviously it can't compare to my 4MP digicam. But whenever I need a camera I can always count on my phone being there w/ me. The rest of the phone is great. The menu is intuitive and very easy to use. The speakerphone is clear and web browsing just as good. Although navigation can be kind of tricky at times. Overall a very well balanced phone. I highly recommend this! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're sticking with TDMA for now, give this phone a look
I upgraded to this phone from the Nokia 8260. I've been very happy with its convenience and performance. It's had hard use from me; I've dropped it at least a dozen times and it's been banged around in my carry-on through many flights. It has good reception--noticably better than the 8260, and I like Nokia's intuitive operating system. People complained a lot about the offset keys when this phone first came out, and sure enough, I found it took getting used to. However, once I grew accustomed to the key layout, I found it easier to use without looking--mainly, while driving--than more "standard" keyboards. All in all, this is a light, compact, durable phone, and well worth consideration if you're sticking with TDMA for now. (I've decided to switch to GSM because it's lately giving better reception in the area I often travel to.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Phone
This phone is great for people who want their phone to be... well a phone. I got the best range coverage and I never got cut off in the middle of a call. Even with all of my traveling I never had a problem. The battery life is terrific. I could go days before I had to recharge the battery even whan I used it for calls. The internal antenna was a great feature. No more broken antennas from an accidental drop. The phone proved very durable.

This was the best phone I've had. I wish I didn't have to switch to the GPRS system, it's not nearly as efficient yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best non-GSM phone in a GSM/GPRS world
This is my third Nokia phone with AT&T wireless in 5 years. Previously I had the 6162 and the 8260. I've had this one for nine months now and here are the highpoints.

1. Awesome battery life - a color screen would be nice but the battery life is more important to me. Also shows up better in the sun than a color screen would.
2. Compact size (fits in my pocket)
3. Excellent Coverage. GSM/GPRS phone network is still under construction and will be years before it's close to the size of the older TDMA network. I'm looking forward to being able to take a GSM phone anywhere in the world, but not at the expense of coverage right now.
4. Nokia has the best user interface.
5. Solid but light construction.
6. No Internet crap. I'll use my laptop for that, thanks. Text messaging and short emails are all I need for my phone.

The cell phone sales people are trying HARD to sell those GSM phones but stay away from that for another year or two. I got a good deal on this phone as a longtime customer by threatening to leave and go to another provider if they didn't at least come close to the deals offered to new customers.

Hey, and where do I find that Star Wars Imperial March for a US phone??? :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars the hulk
best phone ive ever owned, and ive had about 7 phones in the last 2 years(i work for a cellphone company). its the most user friendly phone ever. always has good reception, and battery life is awesome, not to mention how sturdy it is. i call it the hulk, ive dropped the phone about 63 times and it still works like brand new.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nokia 8265
I would be on top of the world if I can successfully order Nokia 8265 from you Company. ... Read more

Nokia's new 5165 phone is a worthy successor to the company's hallmark 5160i, one of today's most popular phones. Like its predecessor, the new Nokia is a lightweight personal phone with impressive talk and standby times that's loaded with classic, simple-to-learn features. Its changeable faceplates, 30 different ringers (and room for five downloadable tones), and an expansive world of accessories add up to a fun general-purpose phone. The addition of predictive T9 text input, wireless business cards, and e-mail capabilities make it a business communications tool as well. The 5165's dual-band/trimode operation ensures you'll be able to receive cellular service anywhere it's available. Like Nokia's other AT&T phones, this model does not support Web browsing.

Weighing in at 6.2 ounces (including battery), the highly portable 5165 measures 5.2 inches high, 1.85 inches wide, and 1.2 inches deep, not counting a stubby antenna that extends another 0.7 inches. Extremely rugged, it should stand up well to being thrown into bags and briefcases or occasionally dropped.

Four buttons handle most menu navigation: a hefty "Navi" key in the middle, up and down arrow buttons that control volume during calls, and a key marked "C" for "clear". Menu navigation is very intuitive. A tap of the Navi key brings up the first of a series of graphical menu items. Hit Navi again for additional menu options, or tap the up or down arrow keys to select a different menu. Top-level menu choices are a phone book, messages (SMS and voice-mail alerts), call log, settings (for calls, phone, and security), system, games (Memory, Snake, and Logic), clock, tones, and keypad lock. The brightly backlit display works well with the control keys to simplify finding and making choices. In text mode, the phone provides five 16-character lines.

The 5165 lets you choose from 30 preprogrammed ringer tones. You can also download an additional five from your service provider's Web site, if applicable. Although there's no internal vibration mode, an optional vibrating battery is available. You can store electronic business cards in your phone book. Any friend or associate can forward his or her name, number, and e-mail address to your phone, and you can automatically store the information with some deft menu navigation.

One caveat regarding faceplates: In theory, all 5100-series faceplates should work with this phone, but in practice, only Nokia-brand faceplates seem to work. The problem is the keypad, the thin rubber pad inside the phone on which the actual keys are mounted. We tried several different faceplate models (both Nokia-branded and after-market models) and found the 5165's original keypad will not accommodate non-Nokia faceplates.

The 5165 supports the usual array of call and messaging features. If the services are supported by your carrier, you can use this phone with caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and voice-mail alerts. A call history stores the last 10 numbers dialed, the 10 most recently received calls, and the last 10 missed calls. The phone supports two-way SMS text messaging, but isn't WAP- or Internet-enabled.

The 5165 offers four basic security features: an initial security code, a keypad lock, call-restriction modes, and a lock code that can activate or deactivate memory and menu options. The lock-code feature lets you store numbers in a secret unlocked location, allowing you to make calls even if the phone is locked.

The 5165's NiMH battery is rated to last up to 180 minutes of digital talk time and 200 hours of digital standby time. In our testing, we achieved 180 minutes of digital talk time and over 225 hours of digital standby time.

Overall, Nokia's 5165 is a noteworthy and reasonably priced addition to its 5100-series phones. Choose your favorite faceplate color and ringer tone and start dialing! --Brown Consulting Associates & Thom Arno

Pros:

  • Changeable faceplates
  • Portable; intuitive to use
  • 5-line screen
  • Huge range of Nokia and third-party accessories

Cons:

  • Lacks standard vibration mode
  • Not Web-enabled

How We Tested Battery-Talk/Standby Time

When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phone battery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency (including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, and battery-charging methods and history, will affect performance. When handset manufacturers and mobile-phone carriers list talk-time and standby-time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer to the times they publish as maximum times. Some quote expected battery-life ranges, and in this case you're probably safe to assume you'll experience at least the minimum rated range. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital and analog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, as analog mode consumes much more power than digital mode.

Our Tests: We tested digital-mode talk and standby times with each phone. Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to the manufacturer's directions. To test digital-phone talk time, we turned the phone on, established a digital-carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we simply recorded the time when the phone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped the calls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately and continued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged the battery, and restarted the test. Assuming consistent carrier-signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. It's worth noting the talk-time performance of several phones significantly exceeded the manufacturers' ratings.

To test digital-phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established a carrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone every few hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out. As no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing, and because the phone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, again assuming consistent carrier-signal strength. ... It offers high contrast, saturated colors, and a fast response time that's optimal for displaying games and other moving content.

When you're calling, you'll enjoy essential features like redial, vibrating alert, speed dialing, and side volume keys, as well as choice extras like sleep mode, menu shortcuts, keypad lock, SIM card lock, voice control, and status view.

Integral to the organizer is its clock, which includes a stopwatch, an alarm, and a handy timer.

Cameras, Fun, and Games The camera couldn't be easier: just 1 click to activate it and another to take a picture. That's it. Then you're ready to save and send your picture to anywhere in the world using QuickShare. Want to view your pictures on your computer screen? The T637 can automatically enlarge pictures to VGA size (480 x 640 pixels). Software included in the phone recalculates picture size without sacrificing quality.

And, mobile gaming has never looked better than on the T637's high quality screen. Force and sound feedback guarantees full-throttle fun. The T637 comes with a variety of embedded games, including the legendary racing game V-Rally 2, and many more are available for download.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the "cool" factor...
I've had a lot of phones, and I prefer Motorola phones, but I also needed Bluetooth, and the V600 was just too expensive for me. But this phone is fantastic! The screen is vibrant, the sounds quality if great and the features are SO cool! I found this open source software, float's Mobile Agent (search Google), that allows the user to connect with the phone through the bluetooth connection and do all kinds of things with the phone, like assign photos and rings to contacts, upload images, audio, themes, etc.. It's a gadget geek's dream come true... Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get functionality and more with the T637
For the past three days, I spent a fairly good amount of time scouring the internet; researching cell phones. It was an arduous process. Painful really. Save yourself some time and decide three things you're looking for in a cell phone. This seriously helps get rid of half or at least a third of your options. Me?...I was looking for the following: ONE, a phone compatible with mac's isync. TWO, bluetooth. And THREE, great battery life. Bottom line, I got all three plus a lot more with this bad boy. You should know that despite two of the negative reviews posted here on Amazon, the T637 has scored extremely high with CNET, About.com, and many other tech reviewers. It scores high not just because of it's cool camera, bluetooth and mac compatibility, but also because of it's simple functionality. This is a great phone. Check it out for yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cingular service not sold in my area by Amazon.com
I was trying to order Cingular Cellphone service from amazon.com. When I gave my zip code, it says the service is not available in my area. I called customer service and they told me to give some big city nearby. I gave Boston and it says service is available. I started placing my order and on credit check form it complained about the zip code being different from the service area. I called customer service again and this time I got the answer that if it is not available in my zip code I can not place the order. I tried few near by cities which are adjacent town and it says service is available. I was really confused about it. How do amazon.com really decides to skip some towns while providing service.

I'm frustrated with this experience and miscommunication from the customer serivce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every day gets better with this phone
Hi - this is a great phone. Bluetooth syncs with my mac perfectly. All functions I need are available intuitively and easily. It's the details with this phone that I love: the rounded buttons which allow even my huge hands to type with ease, the strong construction, the bright (and great in sunlight) TFT screen, the ability for it to use my calling cards and enter the numbers for me, the SMS and data counters, the "post-it" notes feature, the alarm, the games.

The big stuff - RF and sound are great. Battery life I have found to be good (they clam something like 300 hours in the specs - but I would say more like 150 - still this is pretty good). The camera is only decent - but I don't consider this a big deal - its for fun and it achieves that goal fine. The menus are fast and access to numbers is easy.

The phone is small and stylish, is smaller than my old T720 - if you include the antenna which you must! (ouch!).

Obviously you can pay more and get better phones - but for the great price its selling for now (net $50 return with new 1yr contract), I don't think you can go wrong, especially if you want a candy-bar style.

best of luck!
Rob

2-0 out of 5 stars Data Pimp
I returned this phone the same day I received it. I got mine with AT&T (sorry, can't write reviews for that one yet), and the phone was pretty much wired to hook up to AT&T's data services at the drop of a pin. All I wanted was a phone that had bluetooth, and I could have put up with a phone that was capable of WAP, SMS, ABC and XYZ, but with this phone, you have to tip-toe around these services if you don't want to accidently start the kb-meter going. There is the "on-line" button on the right side. Tipping the joystick forward (on the AT&T model) initiated a data connection. The upper right key did as well. And if you brought up the main menu with the icons, then the top two icons were data connections.... You get the idea. The phone was designed to funnel users into more expensive data services like cattle heading through feedlot chutes. I felt like making a voice call was buried deep within the phone... somewhere. It made me yearn for my old basic Nokia that did one thing and did it very well. Of course, most of the cell phones out there are turning into data pimps as well, so I don't know what to tell you. Someday, someone's going to get smart and design a cell phone like an iPod. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone!
I was a little hesitent about ordering this phone but I have not been disappointed. The camera and mp3 player are pretty good, particularly when you consider that these are bonus features of a wireless phone.RF performance seems respectable. The unit is nice and compact, the keypad and screen are very good, and the menus and displays are excellent.Navigating through the icons and setup options is very intuitive, I've hardly needed to look at the manual.

The miniSD card is somewhat "crippled" but this is easy to overcome.mp3 files can be transferred to the card via a PC reader. The built-in reader of my HP OfficeJet 7310 works just fine, as the miniSD card shows up as a separate drive to which I can copy or delete files at will. The pictures are a little more work to move off the card, but a $23 Radioshack cable (part #17-760) and a free driver download will do the trick. There is a post on the Phonescoop.com forum for the CDM-8940 that explains the process in detail.Ringtones can be transferred in the same manner as pictures, I believe.

The negatives of the phone are the quality of the speakerphone and lack of Bluetooth.I don't use either feature so these are no matter to me, but if you rely on one or both a lot this isn't the phone for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall great phone
I have had virgin for about 2 year now (including this one) I just recently bought this phone less a week ago. Upgrading from Kryocera 2255. Which is no colors expect black font and blue backaround. Basic features phone book, recent call list, voice dailing and i think 3 or 4 games.

I think Audiovox 8610 is perfect for almost anyone. The price is okay but right now i just send in rebate for $50 back from Sam Goodie. Up front cost with tax is about 130.00/119.00 without. So I figure it perfect deal. Plus I actually got this phone cuz I thought lost old one. It turn out i just had hiden with under my bed.

I love the color screen it has 65k which look great. The ringtones are cool to. I prefer techno since im in my 20's. Phone book is also a plus, speaker phone also great feature if dont want to listen directly into from the phone. Speed dial is good incase you drive you just press the pre-set number you program press send it dials that person #.

It also has to games blackjack. It pretty easy for me. I always like playing it. The other game magic hexa have not spend much time. I wish put more game than 2. The wallpapers are okay. But they should include more.

---------------------------------
Service cost 25 cent per minute after 10 minutes you pay 10 from than forth in 24 hour period. 10 cent for text message/free to recieve. 2.50 per ringtone. Xtra I think are 10 per day.

20 /30/50/100 top cards for when you run out minutes. They also have auto top if count goes below certain it automatically up more minutes or you can purchase from retailer like best buys or 7-Eleven.

I suggest using for emergercies or calling your parents to tell where your at and when going to be home. Because you can use up your minutes fast with 20 or 30 card. If you want to talk a bf or gf have them call but tell you call them from home phone so you dont have buy a new top card the next day. If long distance call you better off using the cell. Remember it same rate 25 per minute.

One last thing you have to top up once every 3 months.

3-0 out of 5 stars ~*Cool Little Flip Phone*~
I recently switched to Virgin Mobile from AT&T's Go Phone. I got a little sick of my old school looking no color Nokia that kept turning itself off when I tried to make calls. So I did a little research on the Virgin Mobile website to see how Virgin works exactly and read a few reviews on here (Amazon). I decided to switch because, I admit, the main reason was I wanted a *color* phone, not a ghetto one like the one I had. Once I found out Virgin came out with a color screen flip phone, I well...flipped! (Not literaly but you get my drift) So Once I had enough dogh, I went the Virgin Mega store and bought it. I'm fairly satisfied with my purchase, but I do have a few little complaints about Virgin Mobile/the Vox which are:

1.) The service kinda sucks. AT&T's was better. But I look over it seeing as how the cool phone makes up for the lousy service.

2.) It's a tad bit spendy if you talk more than 20 minutes a month! I'm not the type of girl that likes to chatter away on my cell phone, but I do average about 10-14 minutes a day which (isn't a lot) and I've already, in the past month, have boughten three $20 top up cards and one $40 one! That's expensive for a poor college girl!

3.) The highest the volume on the phone gets (High & Vibrate) isn't that loud. Sometimes I can't even hear it ring when its in my purse or when its in the next room.

4.) It doesn't work in Alaska. Now, a lot of you are probably like "What the hell, who goes to Alaska?" Well that's where I'm from, so when I go home, it doesn't work and that sucks.

But aside from those four I'm pretty satisfied with the new Vox. It's very lightweight, easy to flip open, has a nice bright color screen, and I love that it has superphonice ringtones. Plus you can go online and choose from hundreds! ...(Maybe even more!) So if you don't talk a lot, have money to spend on numerous top up cards, and aren't planning on going to Alaska or anywhere out of your area anytime soon, than Virgin Mobile and the new Vox are probably for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars This looks very very cool!
I am about to get a virgin phone. Every review i had saw so far said that this is the best virgin phone. I am very interested to get my phone by the end of the month. Does anyone know how to work the screen-savers and wallpapers lol?? Thanks a lot!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great phone.. Virgin Mobile service not the best
After using Tracfone wireless for over a year, I became frustrated with their high rates and outrageous roaming charges and decided to take my service elsewehere. Having heard good things about Virgin Mobile and discovering their rates were one of the cheapest available for a prepaid cellular phone service, I decided to give them a try.

Honestly, I really did want to like Virgin Mobile. This Audiovox 8610 is without a doubt the best cell phone I have ever used. The features are amazing and state-of-the-art. If you want to know more about this phone, please read some of the other reviews. Those reviews are what inspired me to purchase this phone.

While Virgin Mobile is one of the cheapest prepaid services out there, there are many holes in their service. Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint PCS network, which in Michigan has rock solid coverage along major interstates and in metropolitan areas. The catch is, the phone will not work outside the Sprint PCS network. "No Roaming", as their website says, does not mean no roaming charges. It means the phone will not work at all when outside the Sprint PCS area. This claim in not necessarily misleading on Virgin Mobile's website, but it can easily be misinterpreted, since an average cell phone user will assume a phone will be able to roam.

Taking this phone on vacation with me was a mistake, since a few miles off the interstate, coverage disappeared. I also found it very ironic that a local department store sold Virgin Mobile Top-Up cards, while the nearest location with Virgin Mobile/Sprint PCS service was at least 70 miles away. I was actually forced to spend $100 on a different prepaid phone, since I did not want to be without a phone for a week.

The phone number I was given by Virgin Mobile, although in the same area code, was not a local call from my landline phone. Virgin Mobile was absolutely no help when I e-mailed them, so I called about the problem a couple days later and didn't get much more help. I was only told that my phone company likely charges long distance for cell phone calls and that I should contact them. All other cell phones I have called from my landline phone have been local calls as long as they are in the same area code. I felt as though contacting the phone company would do no good, since I want friends and family throughout my local area code to be able to contact me without being charged for a long distance call.

Another complaint came when I was trying to receive incoming calls. I had no problem receiving a call made from a landline to the Virgin Mobile phone (minus the long distance charges), but I could not recieve calls from other cell phone users. An error message would come that said I was not available, and the caller couldn't even get to my voice mail. This happened during all times of the day. This was essentially the last straw for me. People who wanted to get ahold of me would have to use my Tracfone number, even though I had spent $120 on a brand new phone and service from Virgin Mobile.

It sounds as though other users have had more luck with this service than I did. If I could rate this phone, I would give it 5 stars undoubtably. Virgin Mobile's service, on the other hand, would be 1. ... Read more

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the A650, as well. Verizon's optional Mobile Web package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater.

Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with the A650. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service.

The A650 ships with a number of handy tools including a calendar, a to-do list and a voice memo application that can record up to 4 minutes of speech. An alarm clock and calculator are also included.

Imaging and Entertainment
The A650 features customizable screen backgrounds and screen savers so you can make your phone reflect your personality. The phone is also BREW enabled, meaning it supports games written on the BREW platform. Games are available via the Get It Now service.

Amazon.com Product Description

Overview

Compatible with Nextel cell phone service, the ultra-durable Motorola i530 packs all the really necessary features of a modern cell phone into the world's first weatherproof clamshell frame. This phone is so hardy, it actually meets military standard durability specs. If that's not enough, there's also Internet access, speakerphone functionality, a 600-entry phone book, voice recording, voice activation, and more.

Durability

The i530's Military Standard 810 F certification means that the phone can function normally in environments with high degrees of dust, shock, and vibration. Its hard rubber encasing and interior linings and seals all work to protect the phone’s antenna, speaker, keys, battery door, and accessory connections. The i530 also sports tough, rubberized keys designed to be both easy to use and durable in their size and resistance to accidental depression.

Calling Features

Used simply as a phone, the i530 sports a handy 4-way scroll key and two command keys for relatively easy navigation. It also includes a speakerphone function, important for the outdoor/industrial user, which has its own dedicated key. In its closed position, the i530's external screen lets you preview calls before you answer. The phone can also be set to connect to the last Direct Connect call or to a previously assigned Direct Connect contact, by pressing the PTT button. Other calling features include vibrating alert, downloadable voice activation (allowing users to speak a command or number and the phone will respond without a key being touched), recent calls list, call hold, call waiting, a 600-entry phone book, and keypad lock.

Messaging and Internet

The i530 includes basic text messaging, and its Net services include access to news, weather, entertainment, and other Mobile Net-enabled sites, as well as downloadable ring tones, and the always-handy GPS support (for non-Java services such as Mobile Locator).

Other features

The i530 also provides time/date notification, an accessory connector cover that enhances the phone's durability by protecting the bottom accessory connector from dust and debris, a headset jack for direct plug-in without an adaptor, and English, French, and Spanish language settings.

Vital Statistics

The Motorola i530 weighs 6.63 oz. including the battery, and measures 3.6 x 2.0 x 1.1 inches. The phone comes with an OEM standard Lithium Ion battery (750 mAh) rated at about 165 minutes talk time and 75 hours standby time. A travel charger is also included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Above Average Phone
I did have the i730, but i got terrible signal strength with that. So i traded down to the i530. I love this phone. I've had great signal wherever i've gone. I live in Kentucky, so i go into city area's and rural area's but i have had no problem. i love the two way radio, saves $ on the phone bill. Also the cool GPS tracker. The phonebook holds 600 #'s, i will never fill it up. The only downfalls with this phone is the battery. I use my phone all day and i have to charge it every night, if i didnt then it would die on me the next day. also no belt clip comes with this phone. other than that i would recommend this phone to everyone, just but a car charger, it will save your life. my dad and grandfather went out and got the i530 too. Save your $, dont buy the i730, get the i530

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Phone... Can't Go Wrong!
I've been using Nextel at work and all my friends have Nextel... so why not switch? This phone caught my attention because it's very rugged. Granted it's not the smallest phone out there, but its meaty design is great for a good strong grip on the phone. The i530 yellow adds a nice finish to the phone instead of having a plain ol'e black one. In my opinion some of the downfalls to this phone are, no color screen, the menu is sorrta' small and hard to read. Very small 'function' buttons (compared to the actual buttons w/the numbers). All and all very nice, though phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are hard on phones, get this one.
I am a self-proclaimed klutz and have broken multiple phones in the past by dropping, sitting on or other ways. I have not had any problems with the i530 to this date. I have dropped it multiple times, once down a flight of stairs and it works every time I pick it up again. As long as the service is good in your area (...) you will not have any complaints with this phone. I have not charged it in 3 days of heavy usage and it finally is giving me low-battery warnings. If you have coworkers, friends etc with nextel and are thinking of this phone, I would recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute worst
Nextel coverage area is horrible - at least in Northern Virginia / D.C. area. I get "no service" error messages on my cell phone several times a day even though I'm in Fairfax County. My phone won't work inside the house most of the time and forget about using it inside stores or restaurants. I hear the same complaints from other Nextel users. I bought Nextel for the Push-to-Talk feature but that's garbage too. Go with Verizon - coverage is much better and service is cheaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally cool phone
This phone is like really really amazing. It has so many good features it's hard to write about. The reception is great. I live in MD and I called my aunt in North Carolina with excellent reception. I have have nothing but good things to say about this phone. Super cool, super cheap, super great pick! buy it, you'll love it! ... Read more
