Amazon.com Motorola's characteristic smart-button navigation, commonly seen on the company's StarTAC phones, guides you through the V2397's menu options. The keypad design is less cluttered and confusing than StarTAC phones, however--a definite improvement. Although you still have to use the FCN (function) button to access menu options, all control keys (Function, Store, Clear, Recall) are well spaced. The raised, oval-shaped keypad buttons were quite responsive, and we rarely misdialed a call. The phone felt good to hold, and we could dial one-handed. The four-line screen (two lines of text, two lines of status icons) is backlit and easy to read. A standard 2.5-millimeter communication jack for hands-free devices is integrated into the phone. The V2397's handy call management features, including scratchpad memory, one-touch speed-dial locations, multiple call timers, and any-key answer, help you organize your communications. You can store up to 99 numbers in the V2397's phone book, although it does not support multiple entries per contact. Entering phone numbers is easy. Just punch in the number and a unique descriptor, and assign it a memory location. The phone has nine ringer tones, although you can't assign a specific ringer to individual phone-book entries. The 30-incoming and 20-outgoing call logs help you keep track of your conversations, although the V2397 lacks a missed-call log. Other missing features include a minibrowser, PIM functions, profile settings, assignable ringers, and vibrating alert. The V2397 does support caller ID, call waiting, voice-mail alerts, and two-way SMS text messaging, which lets you send and receive alphanumeric messages with other devices. Unfortunately, there is no way to tether the V2397 to a PC, so you can't use it as a digital modem, or import your computer's address book to the phone. To keep your V2397 secure, you can use a four-digit code to lock the whole phone or to restrict outgoing calls to one of 10 numbers stored in special memory locations. You can also block your caller ID information from showing up on a call recipient's phone. The V2397's NiMH batteries are rated up to 100 minutes' talk time and 110 hours' standby time. In our testing, the V2397 held a call for 105 minutes, and it lasted for 112 hours in standby mode. A basic phone for everyday use, the Motorola V2397 scores high marks in visual design and reliability, but it lacks many desirable features. Still, interchangeable phone wraps, two-way text messaging, and a very reasonable price are reasons enough to give this phone consideration. --Thom Arno, edited by Tom Mace Pros: Cons: How We Tested Battery Talk/Standby Time When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phone battery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency (including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, and battery charging methods and history, will affect performance. When handset manufacturers and mobile phone carriers list talk-time and standby-time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer to the times they publish as maximum times. Some quote expected battery life ranges, and in this case you're probably safe to assume you'll experience at least the minimum rated range. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital and analog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, because analog mode consumes much more power than digital mode. Our Tests: We tested digital mode talk and standby times with each phone. Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to the manufacturer's directions. To test digital phone talk time, we turned the phone on, established a digital carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we didn't do anything else except record the time when the phone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped the calls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately and continued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged the battery, and started the test over. Assuming consistent carrier signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. And it's worth noting that several phones' talk-time performance significantly exceeded the manufacturers' ratings. To test digital phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established a carrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone every few hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out. Because no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing and because the phone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, again assuming consistent carrier signal strength. Amazon.com Here's the tale of the tape: the 3360 measures 4.4 by 1.9 by 0.8 inches, and it weighs 4 ounces. This means the phoneis slightly longer than a business card and weighs the same as today's ultracompact phones. It also has an internal antenna--whichpeople either love or hate--though we never had trouble with call reception. To us, everything about this phone isexecuted correctly; the keypad is well-spaced, it has salient features (even though it can't access theInternet wirelessly), and it's inconspicuous while in use. Three buttons handle most of the menu navigation: a central oval-shaped key activates the main menu and lets you selectoptions as they appear; the roller-bar navigation key scrolls through menu options; and the "C" (clear) button jumps backa step and erases text-entry mistakes. Menu choices are: Phone Book, Messages (SMS and voice-mail alerts), Call Log,Profiles (so you can choose how your phone behaves in different environments), Settings (for calls, phone, and security),Forwarding, Games, Calculator, Calendar, Composer (for DIY ring tones), and Keyguard Lock. With the backlit, five-linedisplay (three lines of text, two lines of icons and indicators), we found it easy to navigate through menus and make selections. And here's a definite design improvement on the 8260: the 3360's power button, located on top ofthe phone, is raised a bit so it's easier to use (and find). Like other phones, the 3360 has a full roster of call and messaging features. If offered by your service plan, it supportscaller ID, call waiting, SMS, voice mail, numeric paging, multiparty calling, and e-mail. Call logs maintain the last 10dialed numbers, 10 most recently received calls, and 10 missed calls. PIM functions includea clock, currency converter, calculator, calendar with room for 50 appointments and reminders, and a 250-entry phonebook. But, as we said, the 3360 offers a couple of new features (at least for Nokia phones). We logged on to AT&T Wireless's site from our PC so we could download additionalring tones. The 3360 also has eight preset images you can e-mail to your friends--but in order to take advantage of it both people need to have a 3360 that supports picture messaging. You can also download additional images from AT&T Wireless' site, provided your service plan supports this action. The front and back faceplates are separate, so you can have a two-tone phone if you desire. It was a minor challenge to remove the faceplate on the first try, but it was worth the effort. And while the phone's included gamesweren't enough to take us away from PlayStation 2, we enjoyed Space Impact (sort of Defender meets SpaceInvaders), one of the 3360's four new games. It also features Snake II, Bantumi, andPairs I. The 3360 offers five basic security features: an initial phone lock, keypad lock, call-restriction modes, and the ability to change access codes at any time. The NiMH battery is rated for up to 160 minutes of digital talk time and 7.5 days of digital standby time. In ourtests, we got the phone to hold a call for just about three hours, and it lasted for a full seven days in standby mode. We highly recommend the 3360, and we don't want to give our sample phone back. It looks different from the rest of the herd and has the features we want and need on a daily basis--all for under $100. --Arno Kazarian Pros: Cons: Features | |

Amazon.com About the size of a deck of cards, the phone weighs 3.4 ounces and measures 3.4 inches by 1.81 inches by 0.83 inches. Despite its size, the phone has a solid construction and opens and closes easily without feeling flimsy. The extendable antenna seems a bit fragile and thin, but with a bit of care most callers should have no problems with it. Also handy are the volume and ringer controls on the side of the phone, which let us adjust the phone volume instantly while waiting in line at a coffee shop. When we opened the phone and switched it on, we were pleased to see that it powered up and was ready to use in about 10 seconds--an impressive feat given the graphic-rich content of the start screen. The keypad is practically flawless, leaving enough space between keys for error-free dialing for those with bigger fingers. The directional key, situated top and center, is a bonus, letting us browse through the phones many menus and options without a hitch, which was especially handy while using the wireless Web. The eight-line screen is nicely proportioned and easy to read, both in text size and image clarity, and the four-color gray lends depth to the screen images, giving them a polished look. The soft electric-blue backlighting made dialing a taxi a breeze in a dimly lit lounge. Changing the phones ring tones was simple too--the hard part was choosing one of the 23 tones offered. Eventually we settled on a rather psychedelic version of Ludwig Van Beethovens Fuer Elise. Ringer volume is also easily adjustable, with eight levels of sound and a vibrate mode that ensures you wont miss a call. The phone is also equipped to work with downloadable ring tones, available from Sprint for a minimal fee. One of the best features the SPH-A460 offers is its one-touch wireless Web access. The OpenWave Mobile Browser connected quickly and information from the phones preprogrammed news, weather, and entertainment sites loaded smoothly and were easily navigated. Built-in GPS technology lets the phone access location-based and 911 emergency location services (where available)--handy for accessing driving directions or pinpointing where you are when lost. Best of all, the phone is enabled for voice dialing, and we were able to program and call numbers within minutes of picking up the phone. Voice-activated dialing worked well whether we whispered or yelled into the phone, but understandably, it did seem to have a slight problem with our commands as a garbage truck rolled past. Calls were clear and a bit on the loud side, even with the volume turned to the lowest level, but well take too loud over too quiet any day. Besides the excellent calling features, the e-mail, voice-memo recorder, fax, address book, calendar, and two-way text messaging make the phone an ideal tool for business trips, keeping you connected in more ways than with just a phone call. Or, if you find yourself stuck in an airport or on the train, you can pass time trying to master one of the three rather enigmatic games: Push Push, Fly Ribbon, and Spider Hunter. We were quite happy to see the battery life exceed Samsungs guidelines in our testing. The phone held a call for more than 3 hours, and remaining on for 180 hours in standby mode, as compared with its manufacturer rating of 2.4 hours digital talk time and 170 hours of digital standby time. Once again, were thrilled with this solid new addition to the Samsung legacy, and can only look forward to what theyll come up with next. --Steve ONeil Pros: Cons: How We Tested Battery Talk/StandbyTime When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phone battery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency (including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, and battery charging methods and history, will affect performance. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital and analog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, as analog mode consumes much more power than digital mode. Our Tests: We tested digital-mode talk and standby times with each phone. Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to the manufacturer's directions. To test digital-phone talk time, we turned the phone on, established a digital carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we didn't do anything else except record the time when the phone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped the calls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately and continued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged the battery, and started the test over. Assuming consistent carrier-signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. And it's worth noting that several phones' talk-time performance significantly exceeded the manufacturers' ratings. To test digital-phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established a carrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone everyfew hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out. Since no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing and because thephone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, again assuming consistent carrier signal strength.
