Design

Click the image to get a closer look at the i860's features.
The i860 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The phone sports a very large 176 x 220 TFT color display with a stunning 262,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary 95 x 96 color display that can display photos, images, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The built-in camera and LED flash are located above this display. The speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. Finally, a small button on the hinge of the phone's flip mechanism automatically opens the phone for quick access-- a real plus if you have your hands full.

Calling Features
The i860's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added, as can MP3-based ringtones. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. You can also speak numbers and control other phone features with the sound of your voice. Access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear and the i860's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i860 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i860 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i860 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text and photo messaging. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i860, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

Another Nextel innovation supported by the i860 is Nextel Direct Send. Simply push a button and instantly send all your contact info to another Nextel phone. It's an easy way to get people into your contact list fast.

The i860 ships with a calendar and a calculator, as well as a voice recording application that can record phone conversations if you need to replay directions or meeting times. A time and date clock are also included.

Imaging and Entertainment
The i860's 640 x 480 camera features a digital zoom and built-in flash that makes it easier to get quality shots in low-light situations. The i860 can also capture 10-second video clips. The phone's Media Center application and large internal memory allows you to store hundreds of photos in a variety of file types.

The i860 is packed with a number of Java applications. TeleNav for audible driving directions is included, as is 1KTV multimedia for news (both require a subscription). Preloaded games include ESPN Bassmaster Demo, Space Invaders Demo and Boulder Dash M.E. Demo. More game downloads are available via the Nextel Online service.

i hate this phone so much, whatever can go wrong with a cell phone, it will go wrong with this phone!

5-0 out of 5 stars others are just phones
Nextel and Motorola have developed the ultimate "ultra cool, super sleek, power attitude, I am the man / I am the woman, great phone w/the i860. Not only does it have consistent great sound quality on calls, but the ability to quickly contact other Nextel friends or relatives with a single push of the Direct Connect button makes other phones "just another phone".
**By the way, the Direct Connect (2 way radio) is usable in FULLY PRIVATE mode by simply pressing 1 button. The speaker turns off, you hold the phone to your ear, you scroll to the name of the bud you wish to contact, you push the button to talk and release it to listen and NO ONE has to hear your fast Direct Connect conversation. All Nextel phones have the privacy button for Direct Connect. It makes voice mail such a waste of our time.
That is how I use my Nextel all day at work in the office, I also keep mine on silent vibrate mode for totally discrete private use.
Look at any volunteer fireman/firewoman, construction person, cop, or young Jr High/HS kid in the Westchester/Dutchess/Rockland/Putnam County, NY region: you'll see a Nextel on their belt or in their hand. It is THE PHONE where I live.
Just try one. They have so many plans you will find one you like.

You have to get this cell is real hot!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst phone I've ever owned
My experaience with this phone has been terrible!
This phone is absolute garbage! Failed miserably within first 3 weeks.
Purchased 2; 2nd phone is fine, but 1st is a lemon.

I purchased 2 of these phones.1 works fine (actually a decent phone) the second is crap.Does not hold a charge for more than 26hrs, car charger does not work on phone (but works on other i86's), speaker phone cuts in and out, and the phone drops voice tags (voice activated dialing) at random.
Nextel's response: call Motorola and pay $55 to have phone covered under warranty.(Nextel only covers the phone for 15 days -- Day 17 is not covered)

5-0 out of 5 stars This phone is not for amateurs
All these other retards dont know how to work the phone thats why they say it sucks. If you know what you are doing, you can get as many as up to 30 actual mp3 ring tones on to the phone for free, the same goes for games, apps, and wall papers. This is a better phone than some of the others on the market. As a nextel customer for years, this is one of the best phones they have ever produced. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Lot In A LIttle Package
Pros: This is a great phone. It can do everything you want, from the direct connect to calling, speakerphone or not. But is also has Java apps, web access, and text messaging.

The color screen is bright and easy to read. Unlike other Nextel phones (I had the i530), this one has a nice screen to see the number calling before you open the phone. You can answer it with the flip ,or still decide whether to take it or not.

I have the bronze, it is a nice color, and attractive little phone.

The DC is great, volume levels super, and it is nice Nextel is finally providing smaller phones.

Cons: Buttons are a little small for big guy like me, and while the battery life is good, does need to be charged about every night..not a problemo.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great phone
Before I purchased this phone I read all the reviews. It was the perfect size for me, I loved that it was a flip phone and had the two-way feature, and THIN!!, but I was still very apprehensive about purchasing it because every review I read said the battery life stunk.

I'm glad I gave it a shot.I don't know if my experience with the phone is unique, but I've never had a problem with a low battery. It also charges SUPER fast.I generally put mine on the charger at night, but I've gone almost 3 days without charging it (low usage).I can get two days of use with one charge, and have regularly forgot to charge it at night, plug it in when I'm getting ready in the morning, and have a full day's use.

Other feature I like include the clear color screen, and sound clarity is fantastic. After having this for a few months, I hate using my roommates cell phone..there is just no comparison in sound.

There are a few things I dislike about the phone.I loved the polished steel look, but it scratches easily.I have dropped mine a number of times and it has gotten beat up.Also, it tends to be difficult to use while your driving (unless you use the voice dialing feature) because the option buttons on the screen (such as "store number" and "back") flip irregurly, and don't tend to be intuitional.I'm also not a fan of the speaker on the back of the phone. There is no alarm either. You have to use the "date book" in order to have an alarm and it's not easily set.

But in all I really do love this phone, it has been the best one I have owned in the past 10 years.

1-0 out of 5 stars stinks i830
I have had this phone for 1year and it is the worst service I have ever had with a wireless company the battery stinks loses life before the day is up I never have service when I want it and drops calls when you are talking I would not advise getting this phone

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Phone
I liked this phone it seems to be tough and stylish. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page in the promo box.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good phone. You will enjoy the phone.Happy shopping. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great phone, better customer service
This is a review for boost mobile (nextel's prepaid service).I have a company phone when I travel during the school year, so I wanted a cool prepaid phone.I had (still do) a Nokia 1220 (Tracfone) and that phone was good (very basic), but I only had service in my local area (Houston) and no where else. After getting stuck at Chicago O'Hare without cell service, I decided I needed a phone that would get service in all major areas of the USA.I have not been dissappointed!!The rates are VERY reasonable for prepaid ($.15 - $.25/minute), customer service has been WONDERFUL, and it has (almost) all the cool features I had on my Sprint vision phone.TM, internet and walkie talkie (to Nextel and Boost customers).I hope what I read in an earlier review is not right about them getting bought out by sprint, because I was with them for almost 6 years and the customer service and plans went VERY steadily downhill! If you need a REALLY COOL phone and do not want a monthly contract, consider Boost Mobile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive feedback
The I730 of mine has served me now for over a year and a half. I have never had any major problem. Due to me using it all the time and dropping it a few times I am now looking for another to replace it. I don't have any problems with internet service, cell service or two way radio, unless I go out of the Nextel tower area. Which for me isn't very often. I wouldn't trade mine if I had to.

3-0 out of 5 stars i730 is not that bad
The i730 is a great phone, but I still think sprint is better. I gave this phone a rating of 3 because it doesn't recieve service everywhere you go. that's CRAZY! I thought nextel recieved signal anywhere. Currently I attend Wayne State and my phone rarely has service. On the other hand if I'm at home my phone never drops calls. Nextel really needs to step it up a notch, buI guess I can't say much about it because sprint will be buying them out soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad phone, but the cheaper model gets better signal.
I don't own this phone. I own the cheaper Motorola (Nextel) i710. I have many friends who own this phone though, although a few of them have since "downgraded" to the i710.

The main reason I chose the i710 over this i730 was signal strength. the i710 consistently gets better signal the the i730 no matter which of my friends phones I compare it too. All my friends are on the same wireless plan from Nextel as I am, so I know its not service, it is definitely the phones.

I can have full bars on my phone (5 including the little antennae icon) and my friends phone held right next to mine will have 2 or 3 bars. My phone gets signal in places their phones are "Out of Service."

Now you might say that maybe my friend just has a dud phone. Well I have 4 friends who have the i730, 5 friends with the i710 and one with the i860, all from Nextel, and the i710's always have better signal compared to the i730's. The i860 gets as good a signal as the i710 (but its significantly more expensive too).

I am not sure why two phones based on the same hardware and software have such drastic differences in signal. The only thing I can think of is some hardware added to give the i730 an external screen somehow interferes with the antennae hardware somehow.

Other than signal strength compared to the cheaper and basically identical (except for external screen) i710, the i730 is a pretty good phone. Lots of features, solid and durable construction and good battery life. For me signal was more important that a silver case an an external screen but if you like those things the i730 is a decent phone to use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nextel I830- 4 stars for a Nextel
I have been a cellular user for 10 years, and I have had Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, AT&T and now Nextel. The only reason that I have this phone is for professional buisness reasons.I am not, and probably never will be a fan of Nextel service, cellular call quality, or their customer service which is bound to get worse now that the Sprint/Nextel unholy alliance has gone through.

But regardless of my personal feelings, I still rate the I830 a four star phone, for being a Nextel.Against phones from Verizon, or Cingular the I830 is a 1 1/2 star at the most, for the following reasons.

Pros
1.Compact size, until you have this phone in your hand, you have no idea how nice a small phone can be.
2.Durable, and quality construction, for a style fashion piece, this is a very tough phone. The majority of phones that I owned felt like they were made out of egg shells.
3.Ultra reliable direct connect capability.
4.Looks.This is a super smooth, and hip phone.
5.Media, and menus run smooth.

Cons
1.I do not have enough time or words to properly express my disgust with Nextel cellular phone call quality.Nextel phone calls have all of the crisp sound of two tin cans tied together with string.Even living in the second largest, and most concetrated cell phone grid coverage area does nothing to improve your chances of making, maintaining, understanding, or completing a Nextel cell call.I carry a Verizon cell phone. and a prepaid Cingular phone in the event that I have to make a cell call.NEXTEL CELLULAR QUALITY IS THE WORST THERE IS, WAS, OR EVER WILL BE.
2. The buttons are small.
3. Battery life is terrible 1 1/2 hours on DC, or cellular if you are lucky.I highly recommend the extended life battery. It will increase your talktime to about 5-6 hours.

And there you have it.It you have to have a Nextel, go with this Nextel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Phone
The I830 is perfect for people who need to carry their phone in their pocket, purse, or belt with increased comfort. The I830
weighs only 3.6 ounces and comes in your choice of Silver
or Bronze color. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good choice. You will enjoy the phone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Phone...
I love this phone.. it is sooo much smaller then my old Nextel phone (the I95) it is easy to ues. loud when you want it.. the only that sucks it dont get GREAT reseption... it has more optios..

Im a picky person. and i still like this phone..

2-0 out of 5 stars This phone stinks compared to the i860
all i can say is if you get this phone you must realize that a smaller phone means smaller battery.the battery life is horible on this phone.it never made it past 1 whole day.the other things that i did not like about this phone is that it has a tiny screen & the metal cover gets scratched very easily.DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PHONE, GO GET THE i860 BECAUSE THAT PHONE ROCKS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nextel's shining bronze star!
Finally, Nextel brings long-time users like myself a choice other than carrying around a brick. I've had Nextel service through my employer and also personally for years. I've gone through a gammit of phones - i1000, i88, i90, i95c, i730. I'm sure some have been left out. I almost consider myself an expert on their phones. The i830 is a vast improvement over all predecessors. It is incredibly thin. I can carry this in the front pocket of my jeans and one barely notices. The bronze is simply gorgeous!
The LCD displays incredibly vivid and bright colors. I really liked the i95c and prayed for a smaller, thinner and lighter version. I cannot use this phone in public without being approached by admirers and fellow Nextel users. Everyone gawks over it's size and beauty. The bronze is more visually stunning than silver. However, I don't think the i830 is a phone for heavy business users due to battery capacity. I still use the i95c for heavy M-F business traffic. My i830 is perfect for afterhours and weekends. I do carry an extra battery and have a car charger to ensure I won't be stuck when battery goes dead. You will most likely need to charge phone each night. It has 60 hrs of standby and 1 hr talk on full charge. Overall, I'm very very pleased with this product. *Note: I have an extra i95c in very good condition with slight scratches and is fully operational for sale. SIM card is included and no contract. This was my personal phone. Flat $120.00 includes shipping in USA. I will accept paypal only. Please email me if interested at leel1@netscape.com. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars bad phone
Everyone I know that has this phone say it is no good they are changing to another phone

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone!
I got this phone from Nextel to replace an LGVX10 from Verizon. We'll just say that thisphone beats the pants off that LG piece of junk.

First off, this phone gets very good signal. No matter where I am (in basements, in labs with lots of electronics equipment/computers running) I get signal, and calls come through clearly. Signal strength was my main reason for choosing this phone over the i730 (which has an external screen).

Also this phone is very durable. It is slightly heavier than any of my previous phones, but it is not 'too heavy', but hte over-all construction feels very solid and well put together which is something I naver felt before using my Samsung or LG phones.

The color screen is very nice and images and text are very clear and readable. The phone only comes with a few wallpapers but i was able to add more (i will talk more about this later).

The ring tones are very loud, which is both good and bad. Its good because on my past phones I could never hear the ring tones in a moderatley loud environment with my phone in my pocket, which is a problem I never run into with the i710. But sometimes the rings can be too loud, especially if you are in a quiet environment and forget to turn on vibrate. Ring volume is controlled through a rocker switch on the side of the phone which is convenient for adjucting volume and setting vibrate, but if you use this to turn the sound off, the phone will ring down to vibrate makign it difficult to be discrete about turning you rphone down without opening it. Another good feature is you can use actual .wav sound clips as ring tones, so instead of midi-based mucial ring tones you can actually have clips from your favorite bands. The sound quality isn't all that great but it is still a cool feature. You will want to find a way to getfew custom ring tones, because the phone comes with maybe 10 musical ring tones, and a bunch of bell ring tones most of which are annoying.

I was able to get a USB date cable from Amazon for about $15. Which lets me hook the phone up to my PC to download ring tones and wallpaper images. One thing if you need to know if you want to do this though is that this feature is no longer supported by Nextel, because they now offer a $10 a month data feature which lets you download ring tones (for an additional per-tone fee). If you want to use your data cable you will need to find the WebJal software, which you can find online easily. It was originally released by Motorola for use with Nextel phones, but is no longer on their site because Nextel wants to sell their $10 a month service.

This phone is everything I need and want in a cellphone. I can easily customize the ring tones and background images. I get good signal and calls come through clearly with no static and no dropped calls. Also this phone is fairly inexexpensive becauseit doesn't have any of that camera nonsense that manufacturers tack on that just bring up the price and give you crappy under-exposed and pixelated images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone.
I liked this phone it seems to be tough and stylish. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00. Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page in the promo box. It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good phone. You will enjoy the phone. Happy shopping.

4-0 out of 5 stars new features, none of which are free
It's shameful that Americans are usually the last country to have the latest in phone technology. Sweden is the cell-phone capital of the world - followed by Japan, then Europe... so whatever phones we're using, the Swedes got to play with 2 years ago. Oh well. The way our phone market is here, we're slaves to the industry.

My phone is set up w/ 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights & weekends and unlimited walkie-talkie minutes.

I also have Internet access on the phone, but just the limited access - it's all text, and only access to 80 sites... so few are WAP compatible nowadays.

The color screen is fairly sharp in resolution, all things considered. Unlike the more primitive black-n-white phones, these phones don't come with games - only demos you have to pay for. I bought a data cable so I could put my own photos (wallpaper) on the phone w/o buying someone else's wallpaper. After all, I want my dogs on there, not some else's dogs!

The data cable is not sold with that intent, however. The cable cost over 30 bucks, too! I searched all over the Internet until I found a 3rd party utility called WebJal that lets you put your own wallpaper and ringtones on the phone. So far, I've only had success with the wallpaper. Webjal is only available for Windows, and as a Mac user, I found the lack of support by Nextel and Motorola extremely frustrating. Apparently, Motorola & Nextel don't want you fiddling with their phones (even though you actually buy the phone, they still want to believe it's their phone!), so don't expect Nextel or Motorola to help you in any way to get your personal photos or sound effects on your phone - if you want this ability, wait and pray for the next version of the iPod to be a PDA & Phone combo, or else you'll have to search online like I did for several days to find the appropriate software, etc. to put on your own content.

The phone comes with about 10 ringtones, only one of which isn't absolutely horrible to listen to.

The phone is very easy to program and the buttons are fairly intuitive and there are a couple of "soft" buttons which are context sensitive - so applause to Motorola for that! The phone comes with the battery and a wall charger - and that's it. I had to buy the case (by Bodyglove - it's nice), the car charger and the data cable separately - I spent more on the accessories than I did for the phone and I haven't even bought a hands-free ear-thingy yet!!

The speaker works very well - I was able to have a conversation with my mother on the phone and she didn't even know I was using the speaker until I told her - another star for that!

Also impressive is the volume control that's on the side of the phone. Without even messing with the keyboard, you can quickly adjust your volume without even looking at the phone, just listening as the sound gets quieter and finally goes to vibrate mode. Another star for that.

The speaker and ringer are impressively loud and have a long acoustic range (you can hear it clearly when it's jammed deep in your pocket or purse.

Adding names and numbers is fairly intuitive. I really haven't had to consult my manual for everything, since there is context sensitive help on nearly every screen if you need it.

I'm annoyed that simple games that are free on other phones are not built-in. Considering how much money people spend on ringtones, wallpaper, etc., the phones should be free, since they charge for everything!

The walkie-talkie button can be programmed so you only need to PPT (push to talk) instantly with someone else using Nextel. I have the "local" PPT, which is all of Texas... you have to pay extra to talk nationwide. It's cheaper to have a more expensive plan than to pay for overages - they don't dilly around - 40 cents per minute on overages!

If you talk an hour every day to a friend, your 500 minutes will be eaten up very quickly, but if you're like me, you'll have plenty to spare - I'm hardly on the phone, but it's nice to know I can talk if I need to.

There is supposedly some built-in GPS stuff, but you have to pay for the service, so it's not like a stand-alone GPS device if you want to go GeoCaching or anything.

The phone is conveniently small, but not so small that you need a microscope and/or a toothpick to dial and read the buttons. The accessory clip (sold separately) is really meant for hooking onto belts - so unless you wear slacks with belt, it's not too sturdy to hook onto your jeans or pocket - so I just stick the whole phone in my pocket - and it makes a wierd bulge w/ the clip, etc.

I'm still waiting for my friends to get Nextel so I can use the walkie-talkie feature. Nextel should have a site where folks can exchange their walkie-talkie numbers - because they're totally different than phone numbers, so it's not like you'd lose any privacy - almost like SMS chat, but different.I still pine for the abilities in the "Global" used on "Earth: Final Conflict," but this may still be 10 years off - I hear that Dallas Semiconductor is still working on the flexible/expandible viewscreens. ... This phone is so hardy, it actually meets military standard durability specs. If that's not enough, there's also Internet access, speakerphone functionality, a 600-entry phone book, voice recording, voice activation, and more.

Durability

The i530's Military Standard 810 F certification means that the phone can function normally in environments with high degrees of dust, shock, and vibration. Its hard rubber encasing and interior linings and seals all work to protect the phone’s antenna, speaker, keys, battery door, and accessory connections. The i530 also sports tough, rubberized keys designed to be both easy to use and durable in their size and resistance to accidental depression.

Calling Features

Used simply as a phone, the i530 sports a handy 4-way scroll key and two command keys for relatively easy navigation. It also includes a speakerphone function, important for the outdoor/industrial user, which has its own dedicated key. In its closed position, the i530's external screen lets you preview calls before you answer. The phone can also be set to connect to the last Direct Connect call or to a previously assigned Direct Connect contact, by pressing the PTT button. Other calling features include vibrating alert, downloadable voice activation (allowing users to speak a command or number and the phone will respond without a key being touched), recent calls list, call hold, call waiting, a 600-entry phone book, and keypad lock.

Messaging and Internet

The i530 includes basic text messaging, and its Net services include access to news, weather, entertainment, and other Mobile Net-enabled sites, as well as downloadable ring tones, and the always-handy GPS support (for non-Java services such as Mobile Locator).

Other features

The i530 also provides time/date notification, an accessory connector cover that enhances the phone's durability by protecting the bottom accessory connector from dust and debris, a headset jack for direct plug-in without an adaptor, and English, French, and Spanish language settings.

Vital Statistics

The Motorola i530 weighs 6.63 oz. including the battery, and measures 3.6 x 2.0 x 1.1 inches. The phone comes with an OEM standard Lithium Ion battery (750 mAh) rated at about 165 minutes talk time and 75 hours standby time. A travel charger is also included. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A pre-paid for $40 was better than this!
I still have yet to dicover how to send a text message - but have gotten them. I am starting to believe there is no way to write a text message on it, unless I pay extra and sign up for the web on the phone too. There is no alarm feature or games.I did the tracfone pre-paid before this and that was much cheaper with a nokia that had much better features.I wish I had played with this at the store before getting stuck with it for two years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great , tough phone!
This is a great phone...

1. Nextel is awesome in customer service. THis is my second phone, both were shipped within one day. I had them in 48 hours.

2. The PTT is great, you don't rack up minutes. My wife and I use this all the time, nice feature. In fact, don't get this phone unless you plan to use this a lot, otherwise this is just another phone.

3. Volume on this phone is great, speakerphone loud, but adjustable.

4. Tough little phone..good for cops, construction, firecrews, military, anyone in a dusty, hot, or extreme environment. I am none of the above, but drop my phone a lot and work it hard, and like something a little more durable.

5. DO NOT buy this phone if you are looking for great color in the screen, the latest in graphics and software, etc. It is a good, solid phone, period. It is not real fashionable, I have the yellow and black bumblebee model, but a nice solid feel.

6. You can have internet access, more bells and whistles if you want, but if want that stuff, get something like the i830, Treo 650, etc.

GOOD, RUGGED, DEPENDABLE PHONE!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It
I got this free from a family member who knows nothing about cell phones. It drops calls everyday. It loses the signal all the time; even when it is just sitting idle. I don't know who is worse, Nextel or Motorola. I have Verizon, but the bill is always high. I recently got T-Mobile and they are the only ones who charge long distance. I've had cell phones since 1999 (now 2005) and I NEVER paid long distance before. All of the above mentioned companies have absolutely HORRIBLE customer service. They lack severely in that area. They don't answer emails--that is, if you can find an email address on their website; they keep you on hold, and when they answer they have no idea what they are talking about or what their company sells. They don't care about you, the only care about your money. Be careful with cell phones and usage. Buyer beware.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Phone
I liked this phone it seems to be tough and sturdy. Just do not get the ugly yellow cover for it. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00. 2-0 out of 5 stars Ugly
I hate this phone. I ordered it over the phone sight unseen because it was the cheapest flip phone Nextel had at the time. My friends dubbed it "The Batphone" and they tease me lots every time it gets broken out. It is huge and clunky and has absolutely no extra features. It's good qualities are decent reception and durability. ... Read more

Overview

Compatible with Nextel cell phone service, the ultra-durable Nextel i305 packs all the really necessary features of a modern cell phone into a weatherproof frame that's so hardy, it actually meets military standard durability specs. You'll also get speakerphone functionality, two-way radio capability, voice recording, voice activation, and more.

Durability

In our tests, the i305 proved an excellent, practical phone; a serious communication device for users in a rugged work environment, living in harsh weather climates, or just about anyone who needs a sturdy, no frills mobile phone. Hard rubber encasing and interior linings and seals protect the phone’s antenna, speaker, keys, battery door, and accessory connections against water intrusion from rain, sleet, and snow. Further, the Military Standard 810 F certification means that the i305 can also withstand blowing rain, humidity, salt fog, dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, low pressure, and solar radiation.

Testing durability

We powered up the i305 and gave it a few casual drops on to a cement floor. It showed no cosmetic damage, and continued to function normally. Next, we took the phone outside and chucked it about 100 feet onto a wet, sandy sidewalk. The phone bounced and skidded, and continued to function flawlessly. Used with a pair of medium-duty work gloves, the i305's tough keys proved perfect in their size and resistance to depression, and the dedicated volume and push-to-talk buttons were well-placed on the side of the phone.

The i305 also cleaned easily--after use with the muddy gloves, we simply ran it under an outdoor tap. Nextel has wisely provided enough space between the keys and phone body so that dirt rinses out instead of getting stuck in the cracks and jamming the buttons. The i305 also sports an appropriately straightforward and easy to read 6-line, green and black screen, which did not fog or show discernable wear under our damage tests or the water bath.

Testing calling features

Used simply as a phone, we found that the i305 provided clear reception, even when used in a closed-off basement with its extendible antenna retracted. We were also able to intuit our way through most of the menus without the manual, using the 4-way scroll key and two command keys for relatively easy navigation. The speakerphone function, important for the outdoor/industrial user, was plenty loud when set at top volume, and easily accessible with its own little button at the bottom of the set. The phone can also be set to connect to the last Direct Connect call or to a previously assigned Direct Connect contact, by pressing the PTT button. Other calling features include vibrating alert, downloadable voice activation, a two-way radio (walkie talkie) feature, customizable ring tones, a 600-entry phone book, keypad lock, voice mail, call forwarding, call hold, recent calls list, 3-way calling, and a small degree of display customization. The i305 can even be used as a modem.

Testing messaging and Internet

The i305's Mobile Internet connection was relatively fast. Some of the preset Web favorites included menus for Business Tools, Text Messages (read-only), e-mail, and the Web. The Web menu included links to news, weather, travel, finance, entertainment, and a few other handy sites (including MSN, AOL, and MBN Audio portals), all providing content that scrolled out nicely on the clear, uncluttered screen. While navigation was generally quite good on the i305, one very annoying exception was that there was no clear way to go back to the main menu from the Web site areas; we were forced to disconnect from the Web just to perform this function. To add to the confusion, (at least for the uninitiated) use of the Mobile Internet can be a bit obscure, and none of the included documentation covered this topic. That aside, other Web-related features include a variety of okay-sounding ring tones with the option to download others, and the always-handy GPS function (non-Java), which a!llows map downloading and emergency location determination.

Testing Organizer/Fun and Games

The phone's organizer capabilities are limited to time/date, memo, and voice recording capability with additional downloadable software. The usual phalanx of games and optional extras are essentially ignored. Users get Web access to a few minimalist, downloadable games, but again, accessing the games and information on them is not addressed in the included manual. However, in making a buying decision, we found this to be a non-issue. As if it wasn't obvious before, this phone provides function over form, and is not trying to replace your PDA or Gameboy. The one game we did try out was from the Nextel Arcade site; a primitive little game called Bubble Blast, which seemed like something out of a home computer circa 1984.

Conclusion and Vital Statistics

The Nextel i305 is large, weighing 6.63 oz. including the battery, and measuring 5.0 x 2.3 x 1.4 inches. Overall, we found it to be an excellent choice for just about anyone desiring a highly durable, practical cell phone. Unlike most of its contemporaries, it is not designed to appeal to users through its diminutive size, or complex graphic or organizational features. The phone comes with an OEM standard Lithium Ion battery (750 mAh) rated at about 215 minutes talk time and 90 hours standby time. Display language settings include English, Spanish, and French options. A high capacity battery door and a Black Rapid travel charger are also included. --- Erik Hammen ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Building on the success of the small, pocket-friendly Motorola i830, the new i836 sports a sleek new design and added features like multimedia messaging and group connect technology that make this a must-have upgrade. If you like style that is perfectly fused with functionality, give the i836 a serious look. Plus, with Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology, speakerphone capability and a vibrant color screen, the i836 is the right tool for getting the job done.

Design
With curved lines reminiscent of an Italian race car, this phone is certainly easy on the eyes. Like other Nextel phones, the i836 is built tough for construction and utilities industry users. In fact, it conforms to military standard 810F for blowing rain, humidity, and salt fog. That means it's designed to withstand exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. The case is built from a tough, durable plastic that resists scratches and scuffs better than the metal casing of the i830. The phone also features a large 130 x 130 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nextels best basic phone
I have had this phone for about 3 months, and it is a pretty basic phone. It is very durable, I have dropped it too many times to count, and it only has a scratched screen so far.You have to pay Nextel if you want to add applications, ringtones, or even the speakerphone, but if you have the knowledge and a piece of software called Motorola RSS, you can edit the phones codeplug and unlock the speakerphone, or use WebJAL to add ringtones and apps.

5-0 out of 5 stars basic phone for basic users
I had one of these for over a year, until I finally lost it.Great phone, never gave me so much as a moment's trouble in all that time. No, it doesn't have a camera or a color screen or games, but if all you're looking for is a basic, no frills phone, look no further.Calls were crystal clear, Nextel has very good service, at least in Philadelphia. Also, like almost all Nextel phones, this thing is a tank.I dropped it more times than I could count, at least twice down a flight of stairs, and it never got so much as a scratch on it.All in all this phone is an excellent choice for a first time cell phone user, or for that rare breed of person who just wants to use their cellphone to make PHONE CALLS.

5-0 out of 5 stars great started phone
i love this phone. it works great to have a phone that is just that.. a phone. I did not want to spend a lot on a phone - diffently not on a phone with a lot of features i would not use nor need. So this is a great phone for basic use.... normal calling and 2 way..

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Product
I got this phone for a back up and it's not even good for that.VERY cheap plastic, creaks like an old wooden floor. The DC speaker has loose parts in it so when I am in a DC conversation there's so much rattling it makes it hard to hear. The Charger port has a cheap rubber flap covering it that won't stay shut. There's a horrible tick sound in the background on all my calls that I have never experienced before. The battery lasts me a day if I don't use the phone, with minimal use I find it dying long before the end of the business day.I'm very glad my i710 is on it's way because this thing is just junk. You definitely get less than what you pay for with this item. Many of my friends have left Nextel because of the poor product Motorola is putting out for them. This phone is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motorola i205 Phone (Nextel)
The 1205 model Nextel cell phone is one of the best cell phones that I have had in a long time. It has great coverage and mobility. I have gone days without recharging it.The reason why the battery might run low early is because of many phone calls being made from that cell phone. When you take the phone off the charger and the flap won't close use your finger nail and close the upper corners into the phone and once both corners are into the phone press over the whole flap with your finger. If you have a non-Motorola phone cover on you i205 it is going to be twice as hard but go around all the corners of the flap and im sure you'll get it to stay. Other advantages to the i205 are that you can get many non-motorola accessories from other companies such as: phone covers, colored and flashing key pads, flashing antennas and holsters and cases. I hope this information persuays you to buy a nextel and these helpful tips to help you struggling i205 users. If more help needed with the i205 please email me at Dancingbaby1234@hotmail.com. Durability

The i530's Military Standard 810 F certification means that the phone can function normally in environments with high degrees of dust, shock, and vibration.

5-0 out of 5 stars also available all black color
Nextel and Motorola have developed the ultimate "ultra cool, super sleek, power attitude, great phone w/the i530.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Phone. Durable, no bells and whistles
If you are looking for a phone that can withstand dropping (twice) water, and dust, this is for you. Nice grip, classy design, I have the bumblebee version in yellow and black. Vibrate option, can use DC either as walkie-talkie or more privacy is optional by pushing a button and using DC as a phone where only you hear. Six hundred entries, web access, no color screen, but no biggie on that.
Buttons solid, phone is a little larger than most phones ,but worth it . Nextel service is great.!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Phone
The i530 flip phone comes equipped with today's technological demands including speakerphone, One Touch Direct Connect, Downloadable ring tones, and enable GPS functions. It is available in both yellow and black. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good choice. You will enjoy the phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motorola Yellow i530 and Nextel 300w/Free Incoming Package
Gotta love the $200 rebate.Actually made $75 on the phone. That paid for my activation and first month's fees.

Phone is great.More durable than the newer i730.My wife loves the yellow color. She can find it quickly in her purse.

I called the 800 Nextel number to setup the phone once it arrived. The customer service lady was very friendly and helpful. It took only 15-20 minutes to get the phone active with a number.

I ported my home land line and was told it was going to be 4-6 weeks and they gave me a temporary number.Well everything was changed over in less than a week.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Above Average Phone
I did have the i730, but i got terrible signal strength with that.So i traded down to the i530.I love this phone.I've had great signal wherever i've gone.I live in Kentucky, so i go into city area's and rural area's but i have had no problem.i love the two way radio, saves $ on the phone bill. Also the cool GPS tracker. The phonebook holds 600 #'s, i will never fill it up.The only downfalls with this phone is the battery.I use my phone all day and i have to charge it every night, if i didnt then it would die on me the next day.also no belt clip comes with this phone.other than that i would recommend this phone to everyone, just but a car charger, it will save your life.my dad and grandfather went out and got the i530 too.Save your $, dont buy the i730, get the i530 ... 12. Motorola i95cl Phone (Nextel)

Catlog: Wireless
Manufacturer: Motorola
Sales Rank: 1243

Product Description

Based on Motorola’s i90c phone, the i95cl offers some valuable upgrades that increase the functionality of the phone significantly. The new highlights include a full-color display with an eight-line screen, plus more memory to handle Java programs.

The phone is quite sturdy, but it sacrifices compactness for rugged design. Since it’s too big to fit in most pockets, the i95cl has a belt clip, but at almost 5 ounces it can weigh your belt down a bit. The retractable antenna has a durable feel, and the rubberized volume control and push-to-talk buttons on the side and speaker buttons on top are unlikely to break if the phone is dropped. Buttons on the i95cl’s interior are fairly flat but are spread apart so misdialing is not an issue. An LCD screen on the outside of the flip top is helpful for quickly checking time and date or for screening callers.

The phone was slow to power up (about 40 seconds), but considering the rich graphics, that’s to be expected. Upon start-up, the i95cl put us immediately into the message center. We had no text messages, but a voice mail from a colleague sounded crisp and clear. From the main menu, we easily accessed all of our settings without referring to the manual. The long eight-line, high-contrast screen with a large text and mellow, white backlighting made it easy to read our options from several feet away.

We set our background display to the American flag, (which looked impressive on the color screen), personalized our keys, and adjusted the ring. The i95cl has nine selectable ring styles—the usual tinny electronic-sounding rings--and 10 polyphonic musical files to choose from that sound almost orchestral compared to ring choices on most cell phones. After enjoying Pachebel’s Canon in D Major and Tchaikovsky’s "Waltz of the Flowers," we eventually settled on the "Star-Spangled Banner" for our ring.

The phone book holds multiple numbers for each person, and we had no problem entering a few friends. We set up voice-activated dialing for a few numbers as well, but found that giving a command with even a slight change in tone from the original voice recording caused the i95cl to reject our dialing request.

The i95cl’s Internet connection is one of the faster ones we’ve experienced, and Motorola has bumped up the memory and improved the processor and connectivity speed in this model. In addition to preset weather, financial, and shopping links, the phone lets users do Internet searches and send and receive two-way messages and e-mail (including instant messages with AIM).

The Java apps feature combined with the rich color screen was amazing to behold. Preinstalled apps include a calculator and two fairly sophisticated games. We found that Tiger Woods PGA Tour Wireless Golf has great graphics but is fairly slow and easy to win. The action-packed MotoGP motocross racing game played so well it felt almost like we were on a GameBoy. Subscribers to Nextel Wireless Web service can download additional Java applications from Nextel’s Web site or install custom apps from the Internet.

Motorola has increased the memory in the i95cl (since the release of its predecessor, the i90c) to handle robust Java applications—and it is a significant improvement. However, users still won’t be able to pack a whole lot of apps in there if they want to download a bunch of animated 3-D games. Each of the preexisting games takes up about 700-800 KB of data space and our phone comes with 1,479 KB of free space for new applications. That leaves room for only two additional games or several other business applications. In addition, Java apps share memory space with ring styles, wallpaper images, and voice records, so once users run out of space, they’ll have to start deleting some of these files. Still, this is a fairly recent breakthrough in cellular technology and the fact that Java apps can be stored at all is remarkable.

The i95cl also has the ability to function as a walkie-talkie, through a technology that Motorola and Nextel have been offering for years. Using Nextel Direct Connect, users can communicate with one person or a group via two-way radio. A PTT (push-to-talk) button on the left side of the phone, below the volume buttons, lets users talk without opening the phone or even removing the phone from their belt loop. The best part is that users don’t pay for minutes using the radio.

Overall, the slick features and conveniences on this phone far outweigh the issues with the bulky design. The multitude of communication options make the i95cl an ideal phone for business users who are communicating with employees both on site and long distance. --Cristina Vaamonde

Pros:

  • Supports Java applications, including 3-D games
  • Large full-color display with high-contrast screen
  • More memory and faster processor than its predecessor (Motorola i90c)
  • Fast Internet connectivity
  • Doubles as two-way radio without using minutes

Cons:

  • Bulky design
  • Voice-activated dialing doesn’t always recognize commands
  • Java apps share memory space with ring styles, wallpaper images, and voice records

How We Tested Battery Talk/Standby Time

When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phonebattery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency(including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, andbattery charging methods and history, will affect performance. When handsetmanufacturers and mobile phone carriers list talk-time and standby-time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer tothe times they publish as maximum times. Some quote expected battery liferanges, and in this case you're probably safe to assume you'll experience atleast the minimum rated range. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital andanalog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, asanalog mode consumes much more power than digital mode.

Our Tests: We tested digital-mode talk and standby times with each phone.Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to themanufacturer's directions. To test digital-phone talk time, we turned the phoneon, established a digital carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we didn't do anything else except record the time when thephone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped thecalls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately andcontinued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged thebattery, and started the test over. Assuming consistent carrier-signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. And it's worth noting thatseveral phones' talk-time performance significantly exceeded the manufacturers'ratings.

To test digital-phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established acarrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone everyfew hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out.Since no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing and because thephone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, againassuming consistent carrier signal strength.

i had this phone for over a year, i loved it best phone i ever had, the only negative thing i can say is that the case is kinda weak and the holster holds the phone backwards so it doesnt break the external caller id if dropped, this means you have to take the phone out of the clip to answer the phone, unless you use speaker phone, id recommend this to anyone that wants nextel, best phone they had

5-0 out of 5 stars Great color phone for Nextel users
I've been a Nextel customer for years for both business and personal use. I've used almost all lines of phones. The i95cl was my favorite until i830 came along. The i95 is good for casual and especially heavy business users. The color LCD screen is huge compared to i730 and i830. Apparently Nextel had to reduce screen size in order to reduce phone size. That is one thing I miss in i830. I never had a problem with i95 size since it weighs about 5 oz. Great phone and I could not believe Nextel would discontinue it. *Note: I have an extra i95 for sale. It was my personal phone and in very good condition with some scratches. It is fully operational, travel charger and holster, shipping in USA included for flat $120.00. I will accept paypal only. Please email me if interested at leel1@netscape.com.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice phone
Great phone alot better then sprint! Setting it up with the 800 # Well let's say pack a LUNCH! It took me 4 hours on the phone, and six different people to get connected! They need alot of work on that! After all said and done great phone, great coverage, walkie talkie feature breaks up now and then, but is really quick talking back and forth. No alarm clock? would be nice! if had to activate again would take it to a nextel dealer to do it instead of calling it in! nice pic on colored screen, games look nice.thinking of an upgrade to the i730, GPS but no alarm clock? a full feature phone with GPS to take you anywhere but NO alarm clock to wake you upwhen your there? I go camping and 4 wheeling where the GPS would come in handy and so would the ALARM CLOCK! think they might get the message and make it a downloadablefeature! HOPE THIS HELPS!

4-0 out of 5 stars very solid phone
first, this phone feels huge.I carry it in my pocket every day, but I wish it was half as thick. That said, I've had the phone for a little more than a year and it works perfectly.I've dropped it several times, left it in a hot car, etc and never had a problem.I did buy a second battery when I purchased the phone, and one of the two batteries died after about a year.I just charge it every 36 hours or so and I've usually got plenty of power.I use the Java apps, I use their browser, mostly to check movies, and I use it with a short cable to connect to my iPaq.Everything works great. But it still feels like a brick -- I heard a comedian say that cell phones are the only thing men will brag about theirs being smaller...

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST PRACTICAL PHONE EVER...
...IS THE I95CL...I BOUGHT MINE FROM A NEXTEL STORE...THE PHONE IS AWESOME...THE CUSTOMER SERVICE, HOWEVER...IS HORRENDOUS...I ACTUALLY WAS ONLY ABLE TO SPEAK WITH ONE REPRESENTATIVE IN AMERICA FOR A DISCREPANCY IN MY BILL...OUT OF 4 CALLS...AND THE AMERICAN CUSSED AT ME AND TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD THE ABILITY TO SHUT OFF MY SERVICE...THATS FINE...NOW THAT I BOUGHT THE DATA CABLE IM ABLE TO TRANSFER MY NEXTEL SOFTWARE TO BOOST...VIVA LA REVOLUCIONE!!! ... And with a wrap-around rubber bumper, it's the perfect rugged companion to a rough and tumble day.

Design
Like other Nextel phones, the i58sr is built tough for construction and utilities industry users, or for anyone who needs a rugged wireless phone. The i58sr's candybar design features a black and white, backlit LCD that displays time, call information, battery and signal strength, emails, address book entries, wireless web content and more. The trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. A standard 2.5mm headset jack is also provided, and a multi-directional selection button controls most of the phone's user-friendly menus and options.

Calling Features
The i58sr's built-in address book can store up to 250 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. A vibrating alert can be set when you want to receive calls and messages in quiet or very loud situations. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. The phone supports up to 20 voice dialing contacts. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear and a three-way calling feature lets you combine two ongoing phone calls into one conversation.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i58sr fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i58sr features support for two-way mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text messaging (Nextel messaging charges apply). T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i58sr, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

The i58sr ships with a calendar application that lets you book meetings, plan events, and set alarms that will automatically turn on the phone if needed. There's also a voice recording application that lets you record up to three minutes of audio. A time and date clock are included, as is a GPS location function that can pinpoint your location via latitude and longitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
Boasting over 4 hours of available talk time battery life, the i58sr is a favorite.Available in Yellow/Black or Black/Grey two tones, this phone comes equipped with Speakerphone, One Touch Direct, and is GPS enabled. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good choice. You will enjoy the phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yin & Yang: Wake up Motorola!
The Good: Finally, somebody else realizes the benefit of a rubber coating and its durability. Panasonic's Duramax was my favorite, but it's discontinued. I'm surprised no one makes rubber snap on covers for all the phones. Drop the phone, chances are good it won't break. Moisture resistant (not clothes washer resistant, neither was my Duramax). Scratches nil. A good work phone for tough environments.

The built in speaker phone is great. I especially like the adjustable font size, which sold me on this phone. Color is prettier, but what good is it if I can't see the text? The bland screen makes up for appearance with function...good contrast for seeing even in direct sunlight.

The Not So Good: The speed dial numbers are set automatically and cannot be user defined without erasing the entire entry and info for the person/number auto-assigned to that specific speed dial number. You assign the speed dial number, and it erases whatever occupied it, completely. The logic of this completely evades me. All data for the deleted entry has to be re-entered. Also, every number gets assigned a speed dial number. No choice.

The larger extended life battery was standard with my phone. The design doubles the thickness of the phone. Each battery size requires a different battery cover, most of which are not rubber coated, and sold separately from each battery. Drop the phone on the backside with these covers, it will break. If you have several batteries, plan on having to keep track of the appropriate cover that goes with it. More things to lose.

So far I cannot get the long life battery to last 1 day, with minimal use. The advertised rated talk time is nowhere near reality. I've bought a smaller battery and smaller cover and testing the standby and talk times. May be the long life battery I received is almost DOA.

The battery can be overcharged and damaged, and the charger provided does not detect this and shut off. Aftermarket chargers claim they protect the battery from this.

Bottom Line: You want a very basic durable working person's phone, this is a good one. You want pretty and color and small with lots of ring tones and gizmos, this is not.

Lots of decent accessories available. Car charger is a must.

Wish Motorola would fix the speed dial software, such a basic thing on most all phones. The battery/cover designs are ridiculous. Should be one battery cover for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well
I have had this phone for about a year now.My husband is very careless with his phones (always dropping them, leaving them in the wrong places) and so far, this phone has lasted with him.The only reason I gave it a 4 is the phone is bulky and not very attractive. Also it does not work in some basements and areas at my school. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Phone
The i88s is one of our lightest phones, but comes heavy with features. You'll enjoy One Touch Direct Connect, Voice Activated Dialing, and a customizable main menu. You can't go wrong with this versatile and affordable selection. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good choice. You will enjoy the phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great quality, but very outdated
This was a fantastic phone 3 years ago, and while it still has that high level of quality that makes Motorola so great, it is very outdated at this point.Without a color screen, a camera, a calculator or calander, this phone isn't good for much more beyond calling people. It has a strong signal with great audio quality, but it doesn't even have any games (oh no!)So while I wouldn't be too hasty to get rid of this phone if it still serves you well, I also wouldn't run out and buy this phone new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great with Book Scouting Tool - BookGecko!
Hi, I use this phone with BookGecko to check prices of books, cds, movies, tools and more.It works wonderfully!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best for Phones Business Data Usage
We have 3 i88s phones, and have equipped them with a barcode scanner. Our ScoutPal.com service is used by hundreds of Amazon sellers (bookscouts) and this phone is one of the most popular ones among ScoutPals.Although it is larger than many consumer-oriented cell phones, its rugged and easy to use keypad makes it perfect for business use, as with ScoutPal where with the i88s you can punch in ISBNs and UPCs one-handed.It also has a fairly large no-nonsense up to 12 line display.Nextel service has been very strong and reliable for us, we have used our i88s phones throughout the major Metro areas of WA OR CA NV AZ NM TX CO UT and ID.

Other users comments about the charger connection are correct, you have to be careful as the charger cord terminal end is somewhat fragile. But the phone itself is extremely rugged.

No, you won't get fancy ringtones and full-color movies on this phone, but you will get the facts, just the facts!

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good except for size
I haven't had any problems with this phone since I bought it last October. It has good reception in my area (whereas other Nextel phones, including my family's have not).I am however upgrading my phone even though I have not had it for more than four months. My reasons:mainly the size. The phone is quite large and awkward. The i88s is also not capable of downloading ringtones (and I find the defaulted ringtones on the phone very distracting because they sound just like other phones. When my phone rings, at least one other person always looks for their phone to make sure it isn't theres.).Other than that, this is an excellent phone ... If you're a professional on the go and you need a rugged phone that will stand up to all you dish out, the Motorola i605 is for you. With a huge, stunning screen, as well as support for Bluetooth wireless technology, and Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie service, the i605 is a powerful mobile companion.

Design
The i605 is built extra-tough for construction and utilities industry users. In fact, it conforms to military standard 810F for blowing rain, humidity, and salt fog. That means it's designed to withstand exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. The rubber encasing, interior linings and seals protect the phone's antenna, speakerphone, keys, battery door, and accessory connections against water intrusion.

The phone sports a very large, 176 x 220 TFT color display with a stunning 262,000 colors. The screen is optimized for outdoor use, with enhanced clarity for reading text, graphics, and phone icons. The speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. There's also a 2.5-millimeter headset jack for connecting a hands-free headset. Of course, you can also use the i605's Bluetooth capability to connect a wireless hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The i605's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via download from the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names, while a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Meanwhile, you can access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. There's even an "airplane mode" that allows you to turn off network connections while still using programs, games, voice record features, and the datebook. And if you have an emergency, the i605's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i605 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America, Canada and Latin America. With the i605's powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you're not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage such as hiking, cruise vacations or inside buildings. And last but not least, the i605 features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i605 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, images and audio messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

Another Nextel innovation supported by the i605 is Nextel Direct Send. Simply push a button and instantly send all your contact info to another Nextel phone. It's an easy way to get people into your contact list fast. The i605 ships with a calendar, as well as a voice recording application and a time and date clock. You can also use the phone's Bluetooth capability to wirelessly transmit data from a Bluetooth-enabled device.

The i605 is packed with a number of subscription-based Java applications, many of which focus on increasing business effectiveness. TeleNav for audible GPS-based driving directions is included, as is Road Pathway for fleet management and tracking. 3-0 out of 5 stars i605 Nextel
I have my likes and dislike. First the dislikes. For a phone that is suppose to meet military standards, if really feels cheap, expecially with the extend battery cover that come with the phone. This cover is plastic and makes the entire phone feel cheap. When using the keys, there is also a cheap clicking noise made each time you enter a digit. It has MMS compability, but you need someone with the same phone to use it. Cannot take pictures (not a camera phone) but it has an option for picture id. Likes, there is diffinitely an improvement in the signal strength compare to my i730. Overall size of the phone is nice. LCD screen is very good on the eyes (I wear glasses) If you purchase a data base service, you can send email right from you contact list. And the automatic sleep modes helps save battery life. ... Reviews (140)

4-0 out of 5 stars It has games and a calculator
The previous reviewer said i90c doesn't have a calculator or games, that's incorrect. Under "Java Apps", you can find a calculator, a small utility to help calc the tips, and a few games. I've owned this phone for over a year, the quality has been great, but it looks kinda too bulky now so I replaced it with A630.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst service on the planet
If you want the highest monthly bill for the worst service, buy Nextel. I've had Sprint, At&T, and Verizon, all better and cheaper.Bought Nextel for the Direct Connect, what a mistake.Verizon MUCH better. (New York metro area).

3-0 out of 5 stars Phone is ok for typical users...
In my area, Nextel is the preferred carrier for construction companies. As a person who has 50+ nextel phones on my account, I know alot about the quality of these phones.I have seen them dropped in everything. The i90 is weak in the flip. The flip will fall off at the hinges or it will become disconnected inside the housing and quit working. Also the design of the keypad is weak.It is raised so that after using the i90 heavily for a year, the big round button near the top of the keypad begins to wear an imprint into your flip display.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motorola i90
I bought this phone after a very bad experience with Nokia - not the phone but the service offered in our area (Collegeville,PA). Infact, I bought two of these phones - one for myself and the other for my husband. I simply LOVE this phone. The two best features of this phone are: the walkie talkie that is never out of range and so prompt and the speaker which is so clear and as good as any land line. Also, there is a display window on the phone and you don't need to flip it open to see who's calling.
LOVE IT!!!
[NEGATIVEs]
The phone is a little bulky compared to the other ones available in the market; but I would never trade it for anything else.
I had to call the customer service @ Nextel once and they weren't the most pleasant people.

Would highly recommend it. ... Read more
