5-0 out of 5 stars agree with the indestructible part
I've had the phone for a couple of years. I've lost it in the car, dropped it a number of times, just like the other reviewer. The phone's latest adventure was that I lost it in the blizzard in Washington, DC a couple of weeks ago.It fell out of my pocket and got buried in 6 inches of snow, but I didn't notice for an hour or so.By then I was on the other side of the city.I called the people who lived at the place I thought I dropped it, and asked if they could try calling it to find it in the snow. They couldn't hear it.After more than a week, the snow melted enough that they found the phone.I had flown back across the country and even ordered a replacement phone.Their son told me yesterday he had it and brought it to me.It not only fired up right away, but after a little wiggling around it is now even charging back up and seems to work just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Indestructible
I have a bad habit of dropping my cellphones. I have broken and paid for at least 3 cellphones. This ends up being a costly procedure. Cellphones even on the bottom end are usually about $150 US Dollars. I have had my sony ericsson T300 for almost a year and have done worse things to this phone than any other phone I have ever owned. I dropped it 10 feet off a loading dock onto black top STRAIGHT DOWN. It scratched the case, but everything still works fine. I was thrown in a pool with it in my pocket, it fell out of my pocket and remained at the bottom of the pool for several minutes, and after drying it out overnight, it still worked, even though two other people who wound up in the pool with their cellphones had to go to great lengths to get theirs to work again. My only complaint is it is a little slow to respond to menu entries. Signal is much better than my old nokia 3310 and features are amazing for the price. I HIGHLY recommend this phone to anyone who is sick of breaking phones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away...save your money
I have owned 4 cell phone since I started in this new wave of technology. This phone has been the worst one of them all. The volume on the phone is terrible. The accessaries are VERY limited. The reception is horrible. The only thing I can say good about the T300 is that it is easy to navigate. ... Read more

Similar to Samsung’s much-hyped A500, the N400 has an amazing 128-by-128 color screen, an easy-to-view menu, and all the multimedia features that come with the Sprint PCS Vision network—wireless Internet and e-mail access and downloadable Java games and apps, ringers, and screen savers. All that, and it has a speakerphone function, too.

The N400 fully charged in about 4 to 5 hours and powered up quickly. Unlike its cousin, the A500, this phone does not have an external LCD screen; however, we didn’t miss it. When the earpiece to this flip phone is closed, it frames the main screen so your display is still exposed for screening your calls. We also loved the elegant placement of the navigational buttons, which we found much improved from the A500’s tightly clustered button layout. With the flip phone closed on the N400, you can still access the Menu button on the left and the Back button on the right so you can do everything but use the phone features while the top is closed. A joystick between these two buttons makes scrolling up and down through menus or left to right during messaging fast and easy. Opening the flip top gets you to the phone keypad and Talk and End buttons, so there is no danger of accidentally hitting a button and calling someone with the top closed. Cool blue backlighting on the keypad buttons made dialing from a dark office a piece of cake.

As a Sprint PCS phone, the N400 supports all the multimedia extras and we tested them out. We used the standard aquarium screensaver, which looked amazingly crisp and bright on the full-color screen. The standard polyphonic ring tone--a maniacal clucking chicken sound—was far too realistic. As for games, the N400 is loaded with Space Invaders and demos of Cybiko’s CyRace and Sega’s Monkey Ball, which all look great on the color screen and are easy to maneuver through with the joystick controls. Other fun screen savers, ringers, games, and applications are downloadable through PCS Vision, but you should expect to pay a buck or two for each one. The N400 also joins the picture-taking craze by offering the ability to download photos from a Sprint PCS camera and e-mail them to friends. This is more of a frivolous feature, but can be valuable for e-mailing photos immediately when vacationing or house hunting

We expected an amazing Internet experience on the N400 with its color screen. While the experience was good, we were surprised that Internet surfing on this phone mainly uses a text-based menu so the great graphics aren’t always utilized. In addition, we found connection and page loading times to be fairly slow (about 1 minute average). Still, the superior contrast and 10-line screen made reading a CNN article much more pleasant than on most competing cell phones, and we think that the interface would entice most consumers to access news, weather, and sports scores pretty regularly via the Internet connection. E-mail and text messaging (among other Sprint PCS-enabled phones only) were also slow in terms of load and send time. Text input was a bit tedious but you have the choice of T9 input, which speeds typing up a bit. We did find the character count of 128 characters per message to be limiting for anything more than the simplest correspondence.

And what about the standard phone features? They may seem almost secondary on this phone with all the other awesome facets attracting your attention, but they are actually quite good. The phone book only holds 250 entries but features multiple phone numbers and the option to set speed, voice, and/or group dialing and a special ringer or image for each of your contacts. Unfortunately, the name field only allows 12 characters and can’t fit a first and last name for most contacts, which is a real drawback for business use. Another disadvantage to the N400 is that it doesn’t let you assign the same number to two contacts (i.e., roommates or co-workers with the same work number).

The N400’s voice quality was adequate and the speakerphone was loud and crystal clear. We found it convenient to shift into speakerphone while on a call by pressing the small button on the upper left side of the phone and liked that we didn’t have to be using an earpiece to activate it. The ringer on the phone is also on the loud side. If you like to have the alert sound for tasks or meetings scheduled in the N400’s planner, we recommend you turn the sound way down during quiet meetings so you don’t startle everyone around you. Our tests of voice dialing on the N400 found that voice recognition worked perfectly. One final and unusual bonus on the N400 is its airplane mode, which allows you to access some of the phone’s features, such as games or the planner, during air travel without interfering with the aircraft’s electronics.

The phone fell just short of its rated standby time, making it through 5 rather than 7 days.

Overall, this phone is on our list of favorites, and we would recommend springing for the N400 if upgrading from a basic phone to one with a high-quality color screen. We think the flashy aspects of this phone will appeal to techno-geeks who want to wow their friends with the latest and the greatest. The multimedia features are more focused on fun than productivity so the N400 is probably best for light business users. --Cristina Vaamonde

Pros:

  • Amazingly crisp graphics on color screen
  • Great button layout
  • Supports PCS Vision multimedia features and downloads
  • Optional digital camera attachment
  • Speakerphone for safer phone use while driving
  • Airplane mode

Cons:

  • Slow Internet connection/loading
  • Limited character count in text messaging and phone book
  • Can’t assign same number twice in phone book

How We Tested Battery Talk/Standby Time

When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phonebattery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency(including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, andbattery charging methods and history, will affect performance. When handsetmanufacturers and mobile phone carriers list talk-time and standby-time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer tothe times they publish as maximum times. Some quote expected battery liferanges, and in this case you're probably safe to assume you'll experience atleast the minimum rated range. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital andanalog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, asanalog mode consumes much more power than digital mode.

Our Tests: We tested digital-mode talk and standby times with each phone.Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to themanufacturer's directions. To test digital-phone talk time, we turned the phoneon, established a digital carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we didn't do anything else except record the time when thephone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped thecalls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately andcontinued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged thebattery, and started the test over. Assuming consistent carrier-signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. And it's worth noting thatseveral phones' talk-time performance significantly exceeded the manufacturers'ratings.

To test digital-phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established acarrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone everyfew hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out.Since no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing and because thephone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, againassuming consistent carrier signal strength.

1-0 out of 5 stars This phone is crap
Everything that the reviewer below (Sarahnoid) said is accurate.

This phone offers a lot of attractive options - surf the wireless web, speakerphone, slim design, nice phone book, etc.

Of course, on the negative side, IT OPERATES HARDLY, IF AT ALL.

I have owned this phone for almost two years. In those two years (my service plan is thankfully almost over), this phone has repeatedly dropped coverage in the midst of calls. Never mind that I have been standing in the same freakin' room, in the same POSITION.

The battery, fully charged, is good for a hour, maybe two tops, of sporadic use. If you don't use it at all, it might stay powered three hours. This model also likes to shut off once you plug the charger into the phone. As if plugging in the charger is injurious.

So, if you don't mind a weak antenna, a worthless battery and the always-fun propensity for shutting down in the midst of operation, then this is the phone for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish it were possible to give 0 stars.
This phone was sent to me as a replacement when my fabulous Sanyo lost an argument with gravity. It is, quite possibly, the most worthless piece of crap I've ever owned. It's so horrible that I've called Sprint on several occasions trying to get a replacement for this phone, as it doesn't work very well, if at all.I'm always told that since it was issued to me through the insurance policy I took out on my plan, I have to go through the insurance company. The insurance company then tells me that if I get another phone via the insurance, they will cancel my insurance, as two phones in a year is some sort of red flag--nevermind that the one they sent me is worthless.

If you're lucky, it won't suddenly die when you're talking."Three hour battery" when talking is generous.I'm lucky to make it an hour.I feel I'm constantly charging the damn thing. The voice dial that comes with the phone dials the wrong numbers, if it recognises your voice at all.If you can move two inches to the right or left without dropping the call you're on, it is an act of God.Connecting to the internet to text or get email?Don't even bother. You'll never get on, and if it does make some sort of connection, it's simply to tell you there was a connection error and to try the entire 15 minute process again.

But the best part? The phone jams up.It freezes like a bad computer. You could be mid-dial and the screen will freeze on whatever number you just punched.Nothing will get you out of the freeze except removing the entire battery and starting up the phone again. This will happen whenever you most need to make a call. And it will happen repeatedly. As in, 5 times in a row.

That this phone is still sold is practically a crime. It is a complete rip off.The reception is horrible. It jams. You cannot connect to the internet. You can put in 12 characters for a phone book entry.12.Got a first name longer than 12 characters?Tough.Don't even waste your time thinking about putting a last name in.

And just to further my point:I am stopped at least once a week by someone who recognises my phone. They always ask me how much I like my phone and when I tell them I hate it, they immediately go off on a tirade on how big a piece of junk this phone is.That it jams. That it drops calls. That it doesn't connect. That it's about as useful as a cup of sand in the desert.

I believe the phone is now discontinued on amazon.com.If I ever saw anyone buying this phone in public, I would do everything in my power to convince them to do otherwise.Do yourself a favour and do not waste your money on this p.o.s.Get yourself a Sanyo.Just don't drop it like I did mine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good little tank of a cell-phone...
Samsung is a good phone company because in the two years I have owned their products, they still work for me just as well as they did when I first opened the box up.

I had this phone's older brother first. The N200 seemed to be invincible. I could drop it and it would take a licking and continue ticking. The decision was easy once it was time to upgrade. I had heard not-so-good things about the new Sanyo 5300 and found a heavily-discounted N400 at the Radio Shack near my house.

A year or so later, this phone has done me well. It has a few dings and scratches but so far, has been there for me whenever I need it. If you DO pick one up, I would recommend going to a Sprint Store to get the firmware flashed and updated.

The phone has the ability to screen calls thanks to an ingenious flip design that enables you to still see the call-screen even with the lid down.

It features a speakerphone...however, the speakerphone does not work as well as one would like it to. I never got the idea of a speakerphone on a cell-phone since you could do a hands-free headset and get better voice-quality. It works just well enough but I would advise against using it in a car since the noise in a car just adds to the break-ups and already-hollow sounding voice quality.

The battery has about a week's worth of standby-time and about three hours worth of talk-time, which I don't like very much. A three-hour battery is pretty worthless. What's more, you need a car-charger since it's horrible on the go and the car-charger doesn't come with it, only an A/C Adapter is found in the box.

It supports polyphonic and mp3 ringtones as well as color-photos (you can even take photos using a Sprint-manufacture digi-cam) and the ability to take them. It doesn't support mono ringtones but really does not need to since polyphonic and mp3 ringtones are better. Sprint also CLAIMS that the N400 does not support animated screensavers but the default Aquarium screensaver is animated, so I don't understand why Sprint says this.

You can save up to about 250 contacts with about 6 numbers per contact and a calendar/organizer. You can e-mail, surf the Wireless Web (which is a lot different than the actual Web seeing as how the phone doesn't have the ability to read HTML) and use text-messages. It supports voicemail, 3-way calling and voice-command dialing.

You can also play a ton of basic games...and, oh, by the way, you can make phone calls, too.

I am looking to upgrade soon but this little phone was a godsend. It's durable, light, and compact.

Nice product.

Amazon.com Review

Impressive in terms of sheer design, this little flip phone approaches perfection. A combination of equal parts efficiency and flash, the Samsung S105offers a comprehensive package of standard features and fun, useful extras. When closed, the phone appears alluringly hi-tech with its silver finish, rectangular body, and external LCD display, which shows date, time, battery level, service icon, and caller ID. And, even though the phone only weighs four ounces, it still feels substantial. When flipped open, the S105 doesn't disappoint. Its brilliant full-color LCD with its animated menus, uniquely shaped buttons, and blue backlit keypad numerals dazzles the eye. The folks at Samsung certainly know the power of symmetry, form, and color.

But what good is a cool-looking phone without practical features? The S105 is loaded with them. Extensive call records allow you to view missed incoming and outgoing calls, and the length of total and individual calls. The organizer contains a to-do list, calculator, alarm, currency exchange estimator, and calendar, in which you can write yourself memos for any given day. You can also read and write messages in text format (with SMS support from T-Mobile). The S105 also provides nine precomposed, time-saving templates for simple messages you can send in lieu of typing them yourself. Late for a date? Simply scroll and choose, "I am late and will be there in ___ minutes" and hit Send. These templates can of course be edited and saved. You can also attach sound or graphic objects to messages.

The phone book in the S105 allows for 500 entries in phone memory, and another 250 in the SIM card. Contacts can be organized in up to 10 groups, with each group having its own ring tone and graphic display. You can store up to nine speed-dial numbers.

When it comes to the ring tone, you’ve got many choices. In fact, customizing these settings might bring up unusual quandaries, such as deciding whether or not the phone should play "Carmen" or "Valse des Fleurs" when you get a call. If you’re feeling retro, you can just set the phone to ring like an old-fashioned rotary dial. There are 20 of these polyphonic ringer options to choose from. You can also set your alert to vibration, vibration plus melody, or display light only. Speaking of light, users can even change the color of the service indicator light (eight options), alter the contrast of both LCD displays, choose from 12 full-color animated wallpaper displays, and select menu colorthemes.

Changing the appearance and sounds of phones is great, but whatabout mission-critical features? In our tests we found the voice quality to be excellent. A long-distance call from a busy downtown Seattle street corner was successful. The answering party did not hear a huge truck rumble by, thanks to the phone's microphone noise-cancellation properties. The phone’s network services menu allows broad control over call waiting, call forwarding, and caller ID, as well as network selection (automatic or manual), and band selection (GSM 900/1,800 orGSM 1,900) for travel in foreign countries. Users can manipulate and storesettings such as the SMS service center used for sending messages, and thechannels on which broadcast messages are received. Depending on your serviceplan, the WAP-enabled browser allows access to mobile-friendly Internetsites. You can store URL favorites and set a home page, as well as downloadJava-enabled games and additional sounds for your phone. An infrared portlets you beam data to other IR-equipped units.

All of the many features of the S105 are easily accessed via the phone’s simple navigation interface. An oval-shaped four-position button is used for scrolling, and soft keys to the left and right allow for selection or cancellation/return to a previous menu. There is also a volume button on the side and a headphone jack for thehands-free ear microphone (included). For those times when you’re stuck at the airport, there are three full-color games loaded on the S105. Of these, we like My Pet (you have to see it).

Many of us want, even crave, the most futuristic devices, even ones that will provoke the curiosity and admiration of friends. To this end, the Samsung S105 should be the perfect choice. It’s a spectacular instrument that does the basic work of a cell phone--and much more--in grand fashion. The S105 has it all and never disappoints. --John Bosch

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for 12 months of performance
************Samsung in general: the speaker quit working on the first Samsung I owned (with Sprint)after about 1.5 yrs.(Sprint refused to sell me another phone at a good price without resigning a contract, so I switched to T-Mobile.)The LCD quit working on the second Samsung (my S105 through t-mobile). I dropped the 3rd one into my swimming pool on accident (e315), so it was too soon to know if it was going to be a good phone!**************The Samsung S105 was a pretty good phone overall.I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile when I purchased this phone, and the call quality was much improved - so I don't know if it was the phone or the service provider. The battery was great, the interface was easy to use.The phone felt solid, but was still dainty.Sometimes when I would try to access the phonebook it would stall out, but not very often. After about a year of solid performance, the LCD displays on both the inside and outside went blank. (To be fair, I should add that I live in FL and often had the phone clipped to my waist when working outside - so it could have been the heat.) If this phone has lasted 2 yrs I would have given it a 4 star rating.Maybe a year is more realistic?(Astonishingly enough, the LCD on the e315 phone still works after a dip in the pool, but it won't stop vibrating when I put the battery in and the keys won't work.)My advice - think about buying the insurance or paying less for a phone! ... Amazon.com Product Description

The Audiovox CDM8900 from Verizon Wireless might look like just another flip-phone, but its Internet and data capability, integrated camera, voice-activated dialing, and tri-mode operation are just some of the features under the hood that make this phone a winner. The CDM8900 definitely has it where it counts and this slim companion will get you plugged into the latest cell phone technology.

Design
The phone features a traditional clamshell design with a 128 x 160 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. The rear of the flip-up cover houses a camera that can snap shots at 640 x 480 resolution, also known as VGA resolution. There's also a small 95 x 64 secondary black and white LCD display on the back of the cover that displays incoming call information, network signal strength and more. Most camera features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. Meanwhile, the top right side of the unit houses an extendable antenna while data and charging ports are housed on the unit's bottom edge. Blue lights on the right and left sides of the handset can be set to flash when a call is incoming.

Calling Features
The CDM8900 has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. There's also a built-in address book that can store up to 300 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. Perhaps most importantly for users in rural areas, the CDM8900 is a tri-mode phone, meaning it can operate on Verizon's digital networks, as well as analog networks that serve many outlying areas.

Messaging and Internet
The CDM8900 also covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text and picture messages. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the CDM8900. Verizon's optional Mobile Web package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater.

Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with the CDM8900. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads and digital photo-sharing tools using the Get It Now service.

Imaging and Entertainment
Plenty of good times are built right into this handset. Its VGA camera makes it easier than ever to snap good pictures and share them with friends via picture messaging. Fifteen ringtones are included with the phone and there are plenty more to be had using Verizon's Get It Now service.

Vital Statistics
The Audiovox CDM8900 weighs 3.28 ounces and measures 3.4 x 1.8 x 0.75 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 2.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 103 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the AMPS 800/CDMA 800/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

It seems that most phone makers are so busy adding features (camera phone, fancy lights and ringers) that some important gaffs (IMHO) are made with the design.

The CDM8900's outside LCD is perfect example of this. While it seems obvious to me, it apparently wasn't to Audiovox, that the outside LCD should ALWAYS show the caller's ID when the phone is ringing. The 8900 toggles every 5 seconds between the caller ID and a "Verizon Wireless" banner.According to VZW, that toggling is supposed to show if you are roaming or not.Fine, but does it have to happen during an incoming call?!?!

Another 8900 goof: Speed dial #1 is hard-coded to your cell phone voice mail. You can't modify speed dial #1 so that it auto-dials your account password.Something my old Motorola did.

I would love to see a return of ergnonmic/common sense design in cell phones: Buttons that are easy to dial by touch, easier to see the displays in bad light, and easier to use when driving(like the Speed dial #1).

On the plus side, aside from a squeaky hinge for the flip, it's a sturdy phone with good volume and reception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome phone! And here's a link for the product manual.
K. E. Espejo asked to buy a product manual from someone; here's a link for the CDM89000's 'homepage' and there is a link there that takes you to the manual in PDF format:

[...]

I've had this phone for just about a year and I LOVE it!The earpiece volume is LOUD, it maintains a signal in some tough terrain (Western PA), and it is pretty sturdy, having survived several drops.

Two gripes: The speakerphone could be louder, but works wonderfully in most situations. And the camera, well, the product is first and foremost a phone, so really, enough said, eh?

I would definitely recommend this phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best there is
This phone is amazing. it has plenty of features in it. I am very happy that I bought this phone. If you want to get a new phone, then look no further. This is also a great gift for kids. i really recommend this phone to you all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Manual or User's Guide
Phone works great but manual's missing. Have to navigate all buttons on my own. Can somebody sell or give me a copy of the CDM-8900 Manual or User's Guide, please? Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars This phone is glorious
This phone is VERY good. I use metroPCS and everyone knows that MPCS has A horrible connection. This phone has such good reception that it amazes me. YOu can also buy programs on teh phone such as MovieGoer(Tells you movie times and gives reveiws and etc.) MIDIRingTones (Buy a certain amount of credits and you can buy songs. 1 credit per song) Wall Paper Universe II (Beautiful backgrounds for your phone. Uses Credits also) and oh so much more. YOu can get games liek DUke Nukem, Bomberman, Pacman and so much more. I reccomend this phone to anyone who wants a compact, slick, and lightweight phone with good reception. The camera is awesome it never blurs or anything.

In conclusion: I love this phone and will continue to use it until they make something waaaay better than this. This phone is guaranteed to be useful for MANY MANY years. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars poor receiving but great feature
I like the phone but little dissapointed with the receiving - very very poor - the primary purpose of a phone is to receive calls so if that does not work properly why else do I need a phone? the same place where my Motorola phone has 5 bars this has only 2 bars. Other than that it is very nice and easy to use. I found that the HP PDA phone is much better but I donot have more money to buy it
battery life is good but the memory slot does not accept bluetooth connection cards so you can never use bluetooth with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had this PDA Phone for over a year...
..and I'm hooked.First of all, you should realize that if you're going to own a phone like this, you get a PDA which also doubles as a phone. It's first and foremost a PDA.So, if you just have to have the tiniest device possible, don't want to spend hardly any money on the device, and don't want to spend any time learning how to use it, then this phone is NOT for you.

But, if you're like me, this PDA phone (XDA) is perfect!Besides serving as a phone, I also use this device extensively to read offline web pages (using AvantGo - free), to read ebooks (using the free µBook from www.gowerpoint.com and Microsoft Reader), play games (free and otherwise), and I even use a portable Targus Universal Wireless keyboard (Model # PA870U) to type up notes & journal entries using Microsoft Word which then synchronizes back to my computer. You will probably also like WisBar Advance from www.lakeridgesoftware.com which does a number of other useful things for you (like program control, skins, etc.)

Besides the portable keyboard, I also recommend that owners of this phone immediately obtain a hard case like the OX-0313 at www.styluscentral.com.My phone has survived a few drops, but it has some small dents from dropping it before I had the case.Since I got the case, it has sustained no more damage, despite a few more drops.A friend of mine used to carry his phone (same model) without any case and it met its end after only one drop on concrete.

One last thing you'll want to buy with this phone is an extra SD memory card. That actually is essential, as the internal memory of the PDA itself will fill up quite quickly once you start loading µBook, games, ebooks, etc.I use a 64 MB card and have mostly filled that up.I would recommend starting with a 128 MB card. That may seem too big at first, but you'll quickly use up the space.

You should know that I have NOT used the phone with the T-Mobile internet service so I can't vouch for the quality of that service. As far as standard phone functions go, the phone has done OK.Like many phones, you won't be able to use it in buildings and some locations, depending on antenna, etc. but it has been decent where I live (Minneapolis, MN area).

In short, this has been a great phone for me.I have almost completely stopped lugging around a laptop since I got this phone as it does everything for me that I used the laptop for.Obviously, this won't do everything a regular computer does, but it does everything I need, and more.If you already use a computer daily and would like to carry some of that functionality around with you without lugging around a laptop, this phone is probably ideal for you.

Anyone with questions or comments can email me at VincePlatt AT yahoo.com.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very handy but reception is poor, bulky too
This device is great as far as keeping appointments and so forth but the reception is not as good as other cell phones.
The internet access on this is vvvveeeerrrryyy slow, but it works.Only use it if you have a lot of time to spare or in emergencies.Example, I was in Orlando, FL and I easily pulled up Yahoo yellow pages to get Disney Worlds phone number. In that instance, it was very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I expected!A wonderful surprise...
I purchased the T-Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition as a necessary replacement for both a failing cell phone and an outdated palm-pilot.At first, I was just going to purchase a new phone, but since I was not entering into a new cell-phone contract (just replacing the phone itself), the prices of cell phones nowadays didn't seem very much worth their limited functionality. So I decided to try out this PocketPC Phone Edition.

Let's just say that I am wonderfully surprised by the utility of this little unit.It does everything that I could desire, truly! It syncs effortlessly with other devices (my computer via IR, although you can use a USB connection; other devices by BlueTooth), making file transfer a breeze.I can view and edit documents in various common formats: Word, Excel, text/rich-text, PDF, Microsoft Reader, etc.The media capabilities allow me to store pictures, which display quite nicely on the large (~2x3") high-res screen; and I can play music and video, too -- although that is limited practically by the 32Mb internal storage (an expansion card is available). The PocketPC Phone Edition has a built-in IE web browser that functions via a GPRS connection.I have not paid for this service (appx $20/mo.), but I use the web browser often with download web pages, such as via AvantGo for news and views.Having your morning e-mail downloaded to the unit is wonderful, and makes my morning commute more productive.I greatly enjoy using the SMS message function on the phone, which allows me to text message other cell phones -- it's easier to use writing w/ a stylus than punching keys on a cell phone -- and there is an integrated In Box that stores and categorizes text messages, e-mails, sent items, etc.The Microsoft Windows CE operating system feels familiar, intuitive and functional.

I will add here that the one feature that to me makes this all worthwhile is that it syncs perfectly with Microsoft Outlook, using its addressbook. No more entering numbers into my phone!I just view the addressbook entry (which shows name, address, home/work/cell phone, e-mail, etc.).Tap on e-mail, and I can write that person an e-mail.I can send an instant text message to that person's mobile phone.Tap on a phone number, and it dials.

Some people may comment that T-Mobile's service lags behind other companies. In the past, I would have agreed. But, over the past few years, I believe it is on par with a lot of other companies, at least in Houston, Dallas and New York City, where I have lived, and major metropolitan areas, where I have travelled. This phone has great amplification of signal. The sound quality is good, too, and speakerphone is helpful when you are trying to talk on a noisy street.

Overall, this phone has proved jam-packed with features that I use and enjoy.I am pleased with this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it, but understand it is practical not stylish
This is a great combination phone/PDA.Many small features that make it that much easier such as in your contacts on Microsoft outlook you can tap their phone number to call rather than dialing. The stylus hid in the antenna is perfect as well, it stays in no problem, the case that comes with it is great as well. Has the option of getting a digital camera and lots more memory if needed.
The practical side of it is blaringly obvious though. It is very light, but it is not in sync with the cell phone fashions of today either. It is not a phone you necessarily want on your side for a date or to hit the club.
For what it is meant for, the size and weight are great. I have had zero problems with it and am thoroughly pleased.Just remember its purpose and you will be as well. ... Read more

Like other Nextel phones, the i58sr is built tough for construction and utilities industry users, or for anyone who needs a rugged wireless phone. The i58sr's candybar design features a black and white, backlit LCD that displays time, call information, battery and signal strength, emails, address book entries, wireless web content and more. The trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. A standard 2.5mm headset jack is also provided, and a multi-directional selection button controls most of the phone's user-friendly menus and options.

Messaging, Internet and Tools

T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
Boasting over 4 hours of available talk time battery life, the i58sr is a favorite.Available in Yellow/Black or Black/Grey two tones, this phone comes equipped with Speakerphone, One Touch Direct, and is GPS enabled. But had ordered it off of Nextels site. They even gave me a code that saved me $50.00.Here it is for you all to share (CL897L) case sensitive. On the shopping cart page.It is like an invoice thing. But I think it is a very good choice. You will enjoy the phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yin & Yang: Wake up Motorola!
The Good: Finally, somebody else realizes the benefit of a rubber coating and its durability. Panasonic's Duramax was my favorite, but it's discontinued. I'm surprised no one makes rubber snap on covers for all the phones. Drop the phone, chances are good it won't break. Moisture resistant (not clothes washer resistant, neither was my Duramax). Scratches nil. A good work phone for tough environments.

The built in speaker phone is great. I especially like the adjustable font size, which sold me on this phone. Color is prettier, but what good is it if I can't see the text? The bland screen makes up for appearance with function...good contrast for seeing even in direct sunlight.

The Not So Good: The speed dial numbers are set automatically and cannot be user defined without erasing the entire entry and info for the person/number auto-assigned to that specific speed dial number. You assign the speed dial number, and it erases whatever occupied it, completely. The logic of this completely evades me. All data for the deleted entry has to be re-entered. Also, every number gets assigned a speed dial number. No choice.

The larger extended life battery was standard with my phone. The design doubles the thickness of the phone. Each battery size requires a different battery cover, most of which are not rubber coated, and sold separately from each battery. Drop the phone on the backside with these covers, it will break. If you have several batteries, plan on having to keep track of the appropriate cover that goes with it. More things to lose.

So far I cannot get the long life battery to last 1 day, with minimal use. The advertised rated talk time is nowhere near reality. I've bought a smaller battery and smaller cover and testing the standby and talk times. May be the long life battery I received is almost DOA.

The battery can be overcharged and damaged, and the charger provided does not detect this and shut off. Aftermarket chargers claim they protect the battery from this.

Bottom Line: You want a very basic durable working person's phone, this is a good one. You want pretty and color and small with lots of ring tones and gizmos, this is not.

Lots of decent accessories available. Car charger is a must.

Wish Motorola would fix the speed dial software, such a basic thing on most all phones. The battery/cover designs are ridiculous. Should be one battery cover for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well
I have had this phone for about a year now.My husband is very careless with his phones (always dropping them, leaving them in the wrong places) and so far, this phone has lasted with him.The only reason I gave it a 4 is the phone is bulky and not very attractive. Also it does not work in some basements and areas at my school. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice design, great battery life, but..........
I actually give this phone 2.6 stars, so I figured I would give it the benefit of the doubt and round it up to 3.It feels good and solid and has the right amount of weight without being bulky. The display screen is big and bright.During calls, the phone needs to be PRECISELY placed by the ear in order to hear the party on the other end.Major issue for me.Nice to have a speakerphone, but it must be held close like a walkie-talkie to hear, even in the quietest conditions. This sort of defeats the whole hands-free thing. With the exception of being all the way in the back of Walmart near the camping supplies, the black hole of cell phone reception, I always get at least 2 bars of signal. The menu functions are o.k. (at best) and can be a bit confusing; starting in one application and being directed to another. The battery life is excellent.I can go for almost 4 full days of consistent use before needing to charge the unit. The battery door is weak and flimsy, and prone to opening without meaning to, and the battery will likely pop out if the cover comes off. This model phone should have been designed with a battery pack that just fits the back of the phone without a cover, like most LG phones. To sum things up:

Pros:
1.Bright, crisp display
2.Excellent battery life
3.Good reception
4.Good solid feel
5.Speakerphone (see Cons as well)

Cons:
1.No Bluetooth
2.Requires precise ear placement
3.Menu confusing
4.Speakerphone sound quality
5.Battery door
6.Not a lot of accessories available
7.No PC connectivity or FTP without expensive Verizon
software.

I hoped this helped. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good but could be better!
The phone is good its just that you cant really doewnload anything to it, like ringtones or screensavers but other than that is is a 2.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its nice
I've had this phone for about 4-5 months. Its a nice phone but I want something up to date like the audiovox 8610. I think it can have better reception though. The games are kind of boring also. I recommend it to people getting their first phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try to find out what the minutes cost on the website
I considered purchasing a T-Mobile phone but after going to the website and looking under the prepaid phone section under the heading important information (which was on the left side of the screen) I saw that each domestic minute cost $.30 - .50 a minute. I wasn't so sure after that, even if the phones do look nice. I settled on a virgin mobile phone $.25 a minute for the first ten minutes and then $.10 for the rest of the day.I mean if you are looking for special features you should consider

T-mobile, but that wasn't my main focus in looking for a cell phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This phone is really good.
This phone is really good if you are looking for a phone with nationwide coverage. Only with T-Mobile you can send Text messages all around the world. I am using it to send messages to my friends in Europe and it works (you get even a delivery report)!!! You dont need to sign anything. Just buy it and use it without any restrictions. The KX414's simple candybar design features a large five-line 4,096-color screen. There's a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets on the top left side of the handset. The top right side of the unit houses the antenna while a charging port is placed on the lower right side. Messaging and Internet
The KX414 covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text and picture messages. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile text messaging users.

3-0 out of 5 stars College student's review
For a free phone, this is about average. It's pretty small and is not flimsy.

Sound - good. I've never had a problem. It's always clear, and never too quiet. As far as the phones ringtone capabilities, they're sort of weak. They don't even have good ringtones available unless you're prepared to pay for the little program through get it now, AND the tone for $2.99

The response time to the keys being entered is insanely annoying. Also when you recieve a text and are currently writing one, you have to get out of it and go all theway back into your saved messages, and then you have to key over the entire length thus far to begin to write again. Bad text messaging phone for sure.

the background is tiny so don't be prepared to put anything cool on your wallpaper, you will hardly be able to tell what it is. surfing the web on this phone would be a pain.

OVERALL the phone, for basic functionality, is quite nice. If you are looking for something to play with though, get a phone with more capabilities. I've never had reception issues except where Verizon in general sucks for service.

I would recommend this phone to someone who doesn't talk much on one (batterly life = not good) but is looking for something to maybe call the wifey from at lunchtime. Like I said, it's pretty sturdy too, i've dropped mine quite a few times. If you are going in for a 2-year contract, probably spend the extra to get something that won't be outdated in a couple weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great phone!
I got one of these for free with a one-year contract, and I must say it is a great phone. It does everything a phone should do. The voice quality is outstanding on both ends, and it has competent voice dialing and phone book capabilities. Verizon's coverage is pretty good too. My only complaint is that the screen is a bit dark, and you generally need the backlight to see it. Although it can function as a Web phone, the screen is a bit dinky for that. If all you want is a phone, and you don't care about gimmicky features, then this is a pretty good bet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Mediocre
When my brother signed up for service with Verizon Wireless they were running a BOGO free deal on phones. He got an expensive camera phone and I got stuck with the KX414.The phone isn't terrible but it would be much better with some improvements.

Although the screen is color, it is tiny and hard to read. The ear piece is also rather small and has to be directly on your ear to hear properly. I've had the phone for about six months and the blue "mask" that surrounds the screen is loose and ready to fall off. Many of the numbers on the key pad are fading color and chipping. It will probably need to be replaced.

When I have it on the vibrate setting I end up missing calls because the vibration is so weak. The ringers that come with the phone are annoying so if you plan on buying this phone prepare to spend extra money on ones you can tolerate. If you like games you'll also have to download and pay for them because they don't come with the phone.

I have to charge it every single night so that I don't lose power throughout the day.I do get pretty good service and it is rare that my call is dropped. That is really the only positive.

It is very obvious to me why this phone was free. If you're shopping for a new phone I would spend the extra fifty bucks and get something with a little higher quality. It will pay off in the long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Portable Office
I get a bazillion corporate emails a day and I've gotten pretty sick of hauling the laptop home every evening and on weekends just to keep up. I knew a BlackBerry was a good solution but I had no idea how productive/addictive they were. (I guess they call them CrackBerries for a reason.)

I had an opportunity to try three different BlackBerries. The Cingular 6280 (screen too small), the Cingular 7280 (color screen was hard to read and it was too small) and the T-Mobile 6710. I stuck with the 6710 for the obvious reason. The screen size! It's perfect and very easy to read. The larger screen makes reading emails or the whole calender, especially in agenda view and browsing WAP websites a breeze.

Phone conversations are also crystal clear with no volume issues.

It also comes with a Desktop Cradle (neither Cingular BB came with a cradle). Only complaint is the cradle is RS232 instead of USB.

The battery life is also supurb.

All in all, it's an awesome device and it doesn't leave my side.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying to be fair
Toshiba 2032 with Sprint PCS plan was my first PDA phone and it's been 6 months since I started using it. I bought this item because I thought I need a multiple-purpose pocket PC. I am mostly satisfied with this PPC and sometimes I realize other usabilities with the PPC but there are of course things I wish to have.

As an experienced user of PPC now, I am waiting for a PPC phone with at least 300Mhz speed, 128M memory, bluetooth, megapixel camera, and maybe finger-print recognition. With that kind of PPC phone in the market, I think it would be silly to carry phone, organizer, camera, iPod, and DVD player, seperately because you can do more with the single PPC. I also dare to predict that PPC or different form of the kind will replace our purse and its content (credit card, identification, and money) in our (near or far) future.

I gave 3 stars mainly because there are currently several better PPCs than 2032. So here I write pros and cons of the 2032 PPC to help your decision.

Pros.

1. With $78, you can buy 1GB SD card which can be inserted to the PPC. I mainly use the 1GB disk space to store word or pdf documents, photos, and music files (I currently saved 12 CDs and about 100 documents to the card).

2. Graphics and Interface with stylus are no doubt great. As a computer geek for last 20 years, I hate to sit in front of computer to orgainize my thought and study things in my free time. (Maybe it's time to retire) Pocket PC solved the problem. Watching TV or listening music, I can now use PPC to organize ideas or read books in my sofa or bed.

2. Since PPC can store pdf and word files, as I mentioned, PPC can be literally a eBook. Using ActiveSync, I can easily download books and documents from desktop, and read them anywhere anytime.

3. Wireless web browsing or emailing are great too. I can read news, AOL emails, or googleanywhere with the PPC. If you want to frequently surf internet, don't forget to sign up Sprint vision service. In first month, I didn't do that and ended up with $300 bill. It turned out every web browsing costs $.50-$1.00 per minute without Vision serivice ($15/month). I requested discount and signed up the service. (Sprint kindly gave me the discount)

4. Playing music with Windows media is higher quality than I thought. It's not exactly iPod because of PPC's weight but I cannot say any difference in quality of music while it's portable enough.

5. Speaker phone is loud and clear. With simple holder, it can be used as a car phone . Although it;s not safe to dial numbers with PPC while driving, receiving a call is no problem.

6. As a developer, I can easily develop your own software with Microsoft .NET Visual Studio. Sometimes, it takes 30 minutes to make a simple software!!

Cons.

1. In my opionion, one of weakest point with this PPC is that you cannot use Bluetooth technology. Thus, you cannot have (cool) wireless headset nor wireless data communication with printers/computers. Especially, I think wireless headset is indispensible because it is not convenient to talk with wired headset. (I don't want to use speaker phone for all calls) Also I cannot use the PPC phone as a modem to my laptop. Some suggested you can buy Toshiba Bluetooth SDIO card to enable it. Don't even think about it. I was a fool to actually try it. Whenever PPC goes power-save mode, the Bluetooth SDIO card makes PPC dead. I have to hard-reboot and lose all your installed software. In addition, I couldn't make the bluetooth card wotk with the PPC.

2. I think PPC needs at least 64M memory to run various software without bumpiness. This PPC has 32M memory. Because of this, I have to kill some applications by hand in order to run a heavy-computation application. I thought about upgrading but I don't think there is a safe way to do that.

3. I thought I could use this PPC as portable movie player too. But playing video with Windows Media is not up to my expectation. There is no smoothness at all between actions. I think it's something to do with memory size or CPU speed. With analogy, I guess this PPC may not be good for full-graphic games. (I am not sure because I didn't try any game)

4. Battery life is too short. I can talk via phone only for 1 hour. And for some reason, there is no way of soft battery exchange. Only way to extend battery life is to buy a battery pack (4 AA batteries) and recharge PPC battery with the pack. (bulky!)

5. Quality of connection (wireless phone and internet) is not that good comparing cingular. (But we all hate crazy customer service gang at Cingular, don't we)

6. No thumb keyboard. I don't want totype with full keyboard looking at small screen of PPC. But it's not easy to type with touch-screen keyboard and stylus either. So attachable thumb keyboard would be useful.

7. No camera. I think adding camera to PPC makes it more complete portable PPC. I wouldn't mind quality of picture from PPC. But from time to time, you may want to keep something intopicture.

4-0 out of 5 stars All In One!
I'm so tired of carrying so many things - laptop, cell, pager, pda, pocketbook. I was looking to consolidate. Having a text messaging/PDA/Cell all in one neat little package is VERY convenient. True, Sprint needs to take up their service a notch. True, battery life is little less than desired (I just leave it plugged in when I'm in the car, which is alot and at my desk) PDA is great. For the convenience of carrying one item, instead of three, it's worth it's weight in gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
All i ever wanted. The best Pocket Pc Phone ive ever seen.I can wait to start downloading more stuff on to it! The video/audio windows media player is amazing!
